Florida teen accused of stabbing girl 114 times facing first-degree murder charge

A 14-year-old Florida teen is being charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the brutal stabbing of 13-year-old Tristyn Bailey, prosecutors said. "To say that it was horrific could arguably be made as an understatement," said R.J. Larizza, state attorney for the 7th Judicial Circuit.

This is awful. Murder is murder, and statistically most victims are murdered by those of their same race. By your definitions, this is a “white on white” crime, which occurs 74% of the time, but is just not so named. These crimes are horrible and they are no less painful, nor should they be dismissed or minimized, when the victims and their perps are non-white.

Mental health stopped being a concern in this country under Ronald Reagan when he abruptly cut federal funding that supported local communities addressing the issues of mental health in their cities. In Detroit they just opened the doors and put on the streets anyone that was a resident of the mental Heath hospitals on the day the funding was cut and the facilities closed; it was awful.

This country cannot continue to ignore that we are having real issues with social and emotional health, that it’s citizens are suffering with mental health decline, the evidence of which is showing up loud and unambiguous when a teenage boy can stab a teenage girl 114 times, leaving the tip of his knife in her skull.

We embrace violence and as a result our young people, like this boy, are desensitized and incapable of measuring the seriousness of their choice to destroy or take the life of another human being.

Prayer without work is dead. You can’t keep “praying” without doing the actual work required. We cannot keep addressing the symptoms and not address the sore.

Sadly end for a horrible tragedy, he is guilty and will pay as an adult which IM agree, but this bring to my mind something that is constantly frustrating me... the Pedophiles go Jail and then they are released like the crime the make was not as important as kill somebody destroying the whole life of an innocent child and his whole family, the worts part as I have read in the news a lot of these criminals came out and do it again!!! These people Pedophiles, sex predators, rapists all these sick people should remain for life in prisson or have the death penalty, count how many lives we could've saved if that kind of Psicopats never come back to society.

Let’s stop making excuses for some people. There are some evil people in the world and that’s something we need to come to understand. Sometimes there is no underlying issues except evil!! Don’t tell me about how the brain at his age isn’t fully developed either. That was a painful death she went through and he should suffer the same fate!! Can you imagine the parent who had to identify her body and see what he did to their daughter? I would have nightmares for the rest of my life!!! They will never be able to I unsee it!! Death is the only way to stop these monsters!!! My condolences to the family.

114!!!!!! 114 Times!!!!! I’m so lost of words!!!! And this poor excuse of a teen is probably not going to get the maximum. Let me guess - mostly likely insanity or “mental health”..... meanwhile there are people genuinely have mental health issues and get the help they need and don’t go walking around murdering people. There are people who are just born evil. I don’t care what anyone says or if they don’t agree. But that’s the truth! To the parents of this killer - Great Job!!! Y’all probably knew he had these tendencies and did absolutely Nothing to prevent this teen from committing this heinous act! I can’t imagine the victim’s family! My deepest condolences to them and may god bless and receive this angel! I have a teen daughter myself and I just can’t deal.

I have seen some comments calling for the Death Penalty but due to Roper v Simmons (2005) the young man can be charged as an adult but WILL NOT be charged with Capital Murder because he is under the age of 18. In order for him to be tried as an adult the judge must also sign a waiver allowing the transfer of the case. The judge had to decide if the minor offender had a viable chance for rehabilitation. Given the circumstances of the crime it is unlikely that the case would proceed in juvenile court. Additionally, there appears to be mens rea and actus rea in the crime, which means that a guilty verdict or plea is likely and the perpetrator will probably be sentenced to serve time in an adult prison.

The 14 year old does have criminal capacity by every law of America. At that age he knew very well the consequences of his actions. He definitely won't get the death penalty but he will be in jail for a very long time. Parole is a possibility depending on how his defense attorney argues his defense. It's a sad case overall, two lives have ended with this tragedy and in retrospect, I don't think his would have done what he did given a chance. It's just horrible for both families. My the other find everlasting peace in the after life ️

At the end of the day she's dead he allegedly did it and there's nothing we can do to rewind time to undo it. What we can do is establish a better way of understanding why somebody does this. Once we understand the pattern of behaviors that lead up to these tragic endings we can then move faster with others that are displaying the warning signs. Then perhaps you can prevent them.

We ask why not to understand the inner workings of a murderer we ask why so we can step in sooner and prevent the next.

We can not change the mind of a killer. We can change our society to make it really hard for the killer to kill.

So what was the life of this child murderer and what lessons do we learn to help prevent the next one. What do we need to change in our society to better stop these kinds of crimes?

To say that I can’t imagine the pain that this family is feeling is the biggest understatement but I just can’t get to the point that I can understand our justice system. I don’t pretend to understand mental illness either so I don’t know if this boy can ever be rehabilitated or trusted. So a life term would seem appropriate to at least see if God will help this kid. Trying him as an adult seems like an emotional decision rather than a rational one. I’m sure that I would feel differently if she was my daughter. God bless both families.

10ºThis person is not an adult. Period. I know this was brutal, I know it was awful, and I know this boy should be held accountable. My heart fully goes out to this girls family. That does not make this person mentally/developmentally an adult. There is an incredible amount of positive data around rehabilitation of minors that commit violent offenses. I guarantee they push for life without parole, which other states deemed unconstitutional, until the current Supreme Court overturned. This person has a lot of problems, and I’m going to guess many came from home life. I’m not sure why we aren’t willing to keep them in the juvenile system, and reassess when they move to the adult system at an appropriate age, with the professionals around him at 21, 30, 40, etc.
I encourage all to read up on Jamarion Lawhorn. If rehabilitation is possible for the diagnosis of an underdeveloped brain, it is achievable for many.
We need to be better.
