Fat-shaming by doctors, family, classmates is a global health problem, studies find

Weight stigma is so prevalent and so detrimental to a person’s self-worth and willingness to seek health care that it has become a matter of “social injustice and a significant public health issue,” said the lead author of two new studies on the topic

The PROBLEM is telling someone who’s overweight that they need to lose weight, *without* considering what made the person overweight. Mental or physical stress, adrenal fatigue, nutrient sensitivity or deficit, blood sugar, allergies, hormonal imbalances, auto-immune diseases, etc. All to say NOTHING of the poison Americans consume in our food supply.

There are a LOT of doctors who don’t know what they’re doing and just doctor-google diagnose everything. That’s BS. People go to the doctor *before* they’re obese because they’re gaining weight too fast without reason, the doctor tells them to watch their calories & exercise more, and the underlying problem escalates. Then, when the person gets even more sick, the doctor says that they’re sick because they’re overweight.

What happened in the late 90s/ early 2000s that suddenly made more people fat? Americans didn’t suddenly get hungrier… this was never a problem before and every time I leave the country for a trip, I consume FAR more and drop weight insanely fast.

But sure, let’s “wonder” how this happens and talk about it ad nauseum STILL without changing anything. Are doctors going to change anything or just continue blaming fat people for overeating instead of being blamed for ignoring their patients’ request for help before they became overweight? And they dare to request payment for IGNORING people? and then tell us that the way to heal illness is to lose weight rather than acknowledge that the weight is the result of the long-ignored illness? WTAF?

The problem with this addiction is that unlike smoking or alcohol or drugs, you can't just stop eating. Imagine to an alcoholic or smoker saying well, you have to cut way back to just three cigarettes a day or one drink. Some could do it, many could not. It's one of the last things people are okay humiliating someone for. It's not okay. There are also thin people with eating problems, but because their problem is not visible they are not humiliated. If you can sit down and eat a whole cake for supper and then vomit it up, no one cares, because they don't know about. Obesity is the disease people wear in public.

For years I was told I needed to lose weight, eat better, more fiber, go on this diet, go on that diet, finally to find out I needed surgery on my intestines.. I would say I suffered for 10 yrs at least. Not one of those doctors did any testing just kept blaming my weight. I could hardly hold any food down. When I did it usually made me sick. It took me a long time to learn to advocate for myself and find a doctor who didn't put me down and make me feel like it was all my fault.

Why people feel the need to comment on other's weight is beyond me. Concern? ok, maybe, but it is not their body, and therefore not their business or concern to tell others to lose weight and get fitter. Your weight should be between you, and your health care provider. The person with the extra pounds on them already knows that their weight is not ideal, and may even be unhealthy, and the last thing they need is people coming at them with unsolicited advice and comments about what to do with their figure, weight, and form. Most people who are overweight, are doing something about it, or trying to, and then having someone come up and tell them they're overweight is discouraging to say the least, and some may even stop trying. My health is my concern alone, not anyone else's. Your health is your concern alone, not anyone else's.

Just live an active life, and and enjoy it!

My problem is no one, not ONE of my three doctors I had been to in the past 8 months, told me I was 20lbs overweight. My blood pressure had been higher, as well. We all know there is a link between both and not one doctor said a word to me! I don't own a scale so I had not noticed more than a pot belly and gain in chest area. One of my doctor's told me I weighed the same and when I checked my Mychart it confirmed he had misread my chart as well. I was still 20lbs over what I used to be. In my case, I feel all the doctors were not doing their job by not telling me!

I'm sad because I eat, and I eat because I'm sad. Being overweight and obese sucks. Weight stigma is generally a good thing. Overweight and obese increases the likelihood of serious medical conditions. Not to mention, a person just feels better physically and emotionally when not burdened by it. More focus should be placed on helping people get their weight down for their health instead of just saying "It's ok". Of course there are a lot of caveats when it comes to exercise and weight so one must always keep those in mind. Lack of insurance and high medical bills, even with insurance, are the stigma that highlights the unwillingness to seek health care, not weight.

I am kinda lost in this "new way of communicating". Can someone please tell me HOW to tell someone he/she needs to lose weight without it being called "fat shaming"? Why? Because no matter how one says it, somebody somewhere WILL be offended.

Simple fact is that more weight (in most cases) means more health issues. Medical professionals should be obligated to teach their patients prevention of the diseases and different conditions. Some actually do it. Maybe they don't know how to put it in the nicest way possible, but they ARE doing their jobs.
People have become waaaaaaay to sensitive about everything to the point where it started harming them. Ridiculous.

This is straight non sense perpetuated by society’s desire to find victims under every rock.

If your doctor isn’t discussing the long term dangers & complications of obesity with you they are doing you a great disservice.

If discussing obesity causes you to not want to seek medical care, it is not your medical providers fault.

You are simply looking for a way to avoid the reality of your situation.

Articles like this are enabling and down playing a serious health risk.

After all the retrospective studies on COVID have been completed, we see in the data that obesity and sedentary lifestyles were the biggest risk factors for poor outcomes.

10ºI agree but its literally a doctors job to warn a patient about the health risks associated with obesity. I don't think its called fat shaming. like doctors will encourage their patients to give up smoking any time they see them. I believe body positivity is great and all but at the same time this can encourage people to ignore the health risks that come with being obese. For example covid is an eye opener where obese people are more likely to die or be admitted in an ICU. I do agree that people need to be more sensitive and there is very little support available to people who are over weight.
