3ºThis report has "taken on fresh political power on Capitol Hill", because that was its intention. Released to be spread around once again, the report has been available for scrutinizing by everyone since last year, and now we're slicing and dicing its shreds even more...peering into the cracks, searching and suspecting every piece of dust, and while they're at it, another terrible sickness is plaguing the country....the sickness of hate against Asian Americans. We currently know more about coronaviruses than we ever thought we'd know, and we're constantly watching and updating all of the changes and variants. Haven't we searched an empty lab long enough?
4ºHonestly, the battle being fought this past year was bigger than where the virus came from. Worrying, debating about its source would have interfered with vaccine distribution and getting the message out. Fighting it out with the Chinese at that point in time would have been destructive to getting this mess under control. What does it matter. Go ahead and do the investigation. There will likely be no definitive answer. Here in the US we do the same kind of virus studies and most likely an accident would have been hidden from the public here too. Go ahead, investigate, speculate, and lets make the goal to not have this happen again.
5ºAll of this begs the question. With respect to Covid 19, what is a conspiracy theory today, that in a year or two will suddenly sound plausible? The major concern is not so much that scientists made have been mistaken when they claimed that there was no way that this virus could have been man-made but rather the heavy-handedness at which any discourse on the matter was shut down. Remember how at the start of the pandemic when questioned about masks, Dr. Fauci scoffed at the idea that they could be helpful? I'm not faulting scientists for not being perfect. I AM criticizing them for dismissing ideas wholeheartedly without acknowledging the possibility that the scientists themselves could be wrong.
6ºWell, perhaps for people with the memory span of a goldfish its new. But this wasn't a new assertion, a new document or any new evidence. It's just new window dressing!
What we had were early hypothesis about how the virus MAY have come to be. Of course, lab leaks are plausible. So is Trump having actually won the election! Or UFOs being aliens. Its all "plausible". But it's far from the other models which are much more probable and realistic.
So the new classified evidence revealed publically is this: "But in recent months, classified intelligence has emerged that three researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology who were conducting the kind of controversial research that some scientists now believe may have led to the pandemic had gotten sick in the autumn of 2019, before the outbreak was known to have begun."
Three workers got sick enough to go to the hospital in autumn? This is it?!!
C'mon, it's a big facility. Many workers, and we don't expect Chinese workers to get injured, sick, or preexisting conditions from appendicitis, maternity, cancer treatments, sprains or fractures, heart attacks, etc which require them to go to hospital over a period of 2 months?!!
Unless you have the IQ of a goldfish, you wouldn't favor "plausible" when more realistic and probable reasons at hand!
7ºThere are two things going on in the debate here, and we must differentiate, as one is rational and one is not. One is the possibility that an infectious virus being studied at a lab escaped containment. Impossible to prove, but it certainly may have happened. The other is a conspiracy theory that China purposely designed a virus to release into the world and kill...someone, for...reasons. That's silly. Third graders know that viruses are not containable in a targeted way and would make terrible war weapons for that reason. Plus, the genome has been sequenced, and it shows no evidence of human alteration. This is a naturally-occurring virus (like the other six human coronaviruses are) and it crossed over from animals (like the other six human coronaviruses did). It either got out of a lab, or was caught in a market and infected various people in a town that happened to contain an infectious disease lab (as tens of thousands of towns do), or it came from some totally other location and was noticed in Wuhan because - guess what - they have a lab there that identifies infectious diseases. The last one has precedent. HIV crossed over in Cameroon around 1910. It wasn't identified as a "new" disease until it arrived in places that could identify such diseases. Meanwhile, it had already been killing people for decades. I myself am prone to think SARS-CoV-2 crossed into humans in some remote location, and when it started causing mass illness in a populated area scientists took notice.
