Hospitals could face $2 million fine for not disclosing prices under proposed Biden rule

The Biden administration is doubling down on a Trump-era rule that requires hospitals to disclose the rates they privately negotiate with insurers.

As someone in medical billing, this may sound good, but what it really means is that the patient or caregiver price-shopping for healthcare also needs to understand medical coding and billing because without that you won’t be able to predict what codes will spill onto page seven of the bill and the hospital isn’t going to guess for you. What we really need are average costs for an entire package of care for a certain illness or injury. We need star ratings for cost and quality like we have for restaurants.

This also still doesn’t help anyone in an emergency situation.
