Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds

The proportion of schizophrenia cases linked with problematic use of marijuana has increased over the past 25 years, according to a new study from Denmark.

Ohhh no looks like the pill market aka the FDA is at it again they can't handle losing life long pill abusers to a natural alternative...I'm not saying experts are dumb because they most certainly aren't however I would never call them experts because fda has caused more deaths and illments with the junk the push through the actual pharmacy so not even the "experts" truly know. anything can cause psychosis pill, alcohol, stress from work ,chemical shift in the brain, and rare case even pot but definitely not the main link I can go get the same degree as these people have not trying to knock people but just because you have a degree doesn't mean you know 100% of everything you study

I believe it.
I am not against it but for me personally..I get anxious with extreme anxiety and paranoia. My heart races and I feel crazy. The ONLY time I've ever had seizures is when smoking weed.
I know it helps alot of people but my experience isn't so great. I used to smoke as a teen and then one day I fell out and had a seizure. Every since then I can't smoke. I've had 3 episodes. I have tried and it makes me feel awful. I do understand it helps a lot of people but everyone doesn't have the same response.

I feel like people have a knee-jerk reaction to anything negative about marijuana. Which is completely fair given the decades of propaganda the US government has run agaibst it, partially as a method of targeting people of color.

It is worth mentioning that for a very, very small portion of marijuana users, their use can become problematic and even rise to the level of a substance use disorder. This article is ONLY talking about that small minority.

What is significant here is that another small minority, people with schizophrenia (less than 1% of the population) are over-represented (based on this study) among that small minority that does experience marijuana use problems.

All I see is a bunch of bs. Marijuana is a threat. It’s an all natural pain reducer, stress reliever, and in some cases it is a cure. My oh my what would the world do if their precious DRUGS (Advil, Tylenol, cough syrup,Adderall, Percocets) were knocked off the shelves by grass. They would be broke. Because if you put it in the stores you have to let the people out of jail who you locked up for smoking it, you have to take down the prices on store bought drugs, you have cut the doctors paycheck, etc etc. Don’t be fooled.

REEFER MADNESS LIVES . guess we should just drink ourselves into stupors since alcohol is a safe alternative . talk about fake medical releases ... Pot has nothing to due with it . it may enhance or diminish it . we all joke about people who have been smoking for many many years like Willie Nelson the cheech and chong. Etc . but gee hey and other pre 60s smokers ARe just fine .and what caused it be for legal pot exactly . can it enhance paranoia in some yes it can . but you had paranoia before you smoke . and in a lot of cases it made it worse because it was illegal and people where worried about doing something illegal .

If you use marijuana/weed/THC and you reacted any different than others who normally smokes the plant the issue is "you" not the weed. When I eat the same shellfish my mother eat, but has a breakout unlike her; that is due to my allergies of the shellfish. Evidence is the fact that no one else reacted that way. Only a CannaPharmicist should be reporting about Cannabis in the first place. In a world full of 80-90% smart dummies, you don't want to put mislead information out there like this.
Natural Cannabis doesn't do anything bad to anyone and is still zero death from consumption unlike alcohol and cigarettes which is legal everywhere.

It's not only marijuana that causes mental health problem other drugs do to, where l live they have joined mental health and drug and alcohol services together due dual diagnosis in most cases. It's not just kids. The mental health a Alcohol and Other Drugs services here are great but there many who don't want help and you cannot make them they have to decided to get help they have to be ready or end up as involuntary patient or a community order for drug offences get help they get better they are clean once out the door they start restart using again and also it can be an acquired brain injury ABI. It's hard to see someone who has made the wrong choice in life by helping them you are enabling them to continue using etc but it is self inflicted their choice that goes for both ways. Yes sometimes the system does fails people who want help but slip through the cracks. It's an issue everywhere. But it's up to the person to accept help too.

The same most likely goes for alcohol too if this is the case-- there's a buttload more to it. If you're actually interested in the topic I recommend reading a few better articles in general to get a more accurate view of the topic-- atleast one or two from each point of view (doctor, therapist, patient perspective on what's going on). it's actually pretty interesting. Even Teflon(stuff on nonstick pans) could have possible links-- it may not even be schizophrenia- those are just the symptoms being noted and what someone agreed it matched up with-- it could possibly be a whole nother problem caused by the brain losing its spark from repetitive use of a substance. Our brains are pretty touchy--

Dear media,

Can we please be more clear with our reporting? Schizophrenia is not CAUSED by marijuana use, as your headline would lead one to believe. However, anyone who would believe such an assinine thing needs a medal for making it out of the birth canal. What needs to be made clear here is that people with mental illness, such as schizophrenia, self-medicate with drugs and alcohol because the lack of access to mental health care in this country is appaling. That’s the real story, here. That is the crippling issue that needs national attention and spotlights. My job is hard enough without having to do yours, too.

Sincerely,
A forensic mental health professional.

And before anyone comes at me about the study being done in Denmark, that’s of little importance in the grand scheme of psychological research. They are still attempting to generalize their findings across all demographics of people diagnosed with schizophrenia.

10ºGreat research! But why choose this one CNN? Why not talk about the drugs that the “high class” loves? Such as cocaine? Or the toxins poured in everyday food? There’s a social context of marijuana use by minorities and the weight of prejudice and persecution on them. “War on drugs”? Before attacking weed (CNN not the researcher), remember your social duty and remember that are many LEGAL substances that are more harmful, and there’s almost no welfare (including public healthcare) system set in place to handle the people’s needs, despite usage of any substance.
Educate, legalize, normalize. Abuse of anything is always bad, education and destruction of prejudice leads to informed decisions.
