Book banning efforts are inspiring readers to form banned book clubs

The recent wave of book challenges inspired this eighth-grader to join forces with a local bookstore and start a banned book club. The community is one of several banned book clubs that have formed in response to a growing push from the right to control what titles young people have access to.

JA Finigan not at all the same thing, and teachers not doing that. You keep going on about your child development credentials but you know dang well that has nothing to do with what's going on. Parents are complaining about CRT being taught in elementary schools when it's not. People are objecting to any reference to social issues that they object to for religious reasons. People are objecting to any historical information that makes them uncomfortable in some way. They are objecting to things that are real, that many children, whether you like it or not, are experiencing in real life. Like living with two moms or two dads, or having a gay sibling, or discovering that they themselves may be gay. People are objecting to any acknowledgement of, or reference to, the real life experience of many of the children in the schools. Instead of being accepting and inclusive, they want to be hateful and exclusionary. They want to impose their rigid, fear and hate based conservative Christian beliefs on everyone else. They are exaggerating, or even making up Boogeymen to scare people in order to push their agenda.

Briar Raine I am just informing everyone here but it is impossible to inform EVERYONE. These words do mean what they exactly say, and you and your right wing ideals can leave. The left is about canceling books, we are about controlling what gets shown to the children and soon once the communist party rises this will happen. We will be sure to silence your rotten ideals of free reading and speech when that occurs. Until then study the left and communist policy, every communist nation new and old banned books and jailed anyone who touched those banned books. This is a left wing ideology the right stole but for the longest time the right was the center of free speech and such, look at Musk. It seems like some are now starting to see how important this left wing policy of banning books is. Next step is hailing those who read banned books, just like China Vietnam Venezuela Cuba USSR…. Literally just like every communist nation, and you can confirm this with a simple Google search. See you behind the bars you fascist.

Justin Woz. So let's not study history then since we didn't live it? We know that the "winners" always write the "history" of an event and the perspective of the "losers" rarely sees the light of day. When it does it is treated as blasphemy. Critical Race Theory is a reasonable mainstream perspective of the American slave experience. There is no way that someone can say that Slavery, one of America's original sins, didn't shape our country's entire history and impacts our society still. Admitting our countries failures is the definition of patriotism, the opposite of MAGA. It is important that we are exposed to all perspectives, and I would say that as Americans we are obligated to "walk a mile" in others shoes and see their perspective. Empathy can't be taught, but everyone can work on being more sympathetic.

Mike Flannigan

You make zero sense.

Trying to decipher this I am once again saying.

if you want a say go open up your own school or go to a private school where they allow for such foolishness.

The Nazis banned books. All authoritarians do.

These are facts!!

If it’s ok to tell teachers and librarians what to do then it’s ok to tell the cops what to do etc.. This is lawlessness and yet another form of anti democratic behavior that is being missed. I don’t like the rules so I’m going to change them. This is what Trump has taught you all. And it’s pure fascism.

Society has expertise for a reason. Society has standards beyond an individuals wants and needs. It’s called looking out for the community or community standards.

Educating society properly is bigger than your ego or white fragility.

Kayla Mickelson And who the do you think you are to tell me or educators what books are appropriate for certain age groups??
You people think you know better of what our children (even though I’m gay and i don’t have or will ever have one) should be taught.
What happens is that your a bunch of perverted people.
Thankfully many schools are banning those so if you want your perverted kids to learn that and become sexual predators then go ahead and put some dirty prn to them now.
Oh and you whiteys don’t have the right to telling us people of color what to think or learn… this isn’t the Middle Ages or the 60s.. now sit the down.

Robert Manley no hunny, im not triggered. I could care less. I just can't believe these kids are your "world savers"
It's humorous and actually very interesting. A world run by feelings and no common sense....I hope you aren't right because what a funny dangerous world that would be, the world "saved" by violent narcissists who have no self emotional control or sense of reality. Scream and spit in someone's face while blaring a bullhorn, if that doesn't work burn the city down. What a wonderful world that would be. I think we have glimpses of what that may be like in places like San Fran, LA, New York, Chicago, Portland.....go there to visit..
Stay because you get murdered. Fantastic, these ideologies have been working wonders! Keep it up kids! You have followed along perfectly to what they trained you to do. Yay 4 yr college!

Melissa Judith …
These “book bans” by the right are just another example of the GOP “identifying” a problem that does NOT exist, “fire up the emotions” of their base, and then “find a solution” to make headlines!

Education is about learning. If parents are concerned about books that have been in schools and libraries for YEARS, perhaps the parents would be wiser to review the book together with their child and discuss the content with critical thinking skills rather than resorting to the “cancel culture” mentality which only creates curiosity for their child to “go behind the back” of their parents!!!

Critical thinking and common sense do not appear to be long suits of “book ban” crusaders!!!
Just saying…

Burt DeWees Removing a book from the library is known as banning a book. Yes, that is what is being done here. Get that through your skull and learn the facts. This is from the First Amendment Encyclopedia: “Book banning, a form of censorship, occurs when private individuals, government officials, or organizations remove books from libraries.” Remember that our Supreme Court has held that students do not “shed their constitutional right to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.” That does not mean that schools cannot remove some material from school libraries, but they cannot remove books simply because they dislike the content.

Nate Bigley Not any difference in burning
or banning? The company for Dr. Seuss removed the books! In history i was taught that presidents in history were great, no mention of the racist ones, until i dug for myself! If people only want kids to see the pearly picture send to a private, or religious school that dictates that! I would like all sides of history taught, good or bad, then my child can decide for themselves, instead of indoctrination! Let's be big enough to present all sides, not just what was pushed on us! Isn't that what the right is doing, with all the trucker and other protest, for the right to choose? To get rid of racism, break the cycle of indoctrination, your kids are smart, and will figure it out for themselves! Hell even Jesus gives us a choice, that's what the right used to teach!

10ºRobert Manley This is how it should be done. In all other communist societies it becomes a jail inducing crime to read banned books. Source: history channel and my history text books, read about communist nations and how they banned books and would jail anyone caught with them. This is a communist and left wing ideal and I’m saying this as a non-republican, left wing person. And I agree with this, we should follow the communist countries and jail anyone reading banned books. Your libertarian and conservative views on authority to decide what to read are wrong, the government decides what we read. You don’t belong with the left with those bad wrong views, go back to Trump with your “free speech” views.
