Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade published by Politico

BREAKING: Politico has obtained what it calls a draft majority opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade, in a stunning breach of Supreme Court confidentiality. The final opinion has not been released.

I have a novel idea: instead of each side bashing the other based on diatribe we all have been fed, let's actually understand what the ruling actually meant: that the Supreme Court agreed (at the time) that legalization of abortion should not have been made at the State level (ie each state could not decide for itself) and instead was a decision on the federal level.

Guess what: there are a TON of things left to the states to decide: how your assets (and debt) are devided in a divorce, what the speed limit is on US highways in your state, how your medicaid funds are spent and on and on... this ruling doesn't quarentee an abortion... it simply negates the State to have it's own codified law regarding it.

So think before you start making irrelevant comments such as, "my body, my decision" or this is a pro life thing. It is about state versus federal rights.

If you want to continue to throw out your opinion on abortion in what is absolutely an irrelevant situation (and continue the divide that is getting bigger in our country) feel free. But now you know who really is dividing our country and quit transferring blame on the other political party's values.

Shame on anyone using this as a scare tactic rather than a state/federal issue

Grizell Johnson more women will also be born and be able to have lives of their own. More women will be able to make contributions to our society by making scientific discoveries or creating amazing new products.

Maybe more women will use birth control as preventative measure and not count on murdering their offspring as a viable option for making a bad choice.

Is your argument everyone in foster care is better off dead? Cause no.

And infants given up are immediately adopted. We should make adoption even easier and it wouldn’t be an issue at all. Most kids in foster care are still wards of the state.

Hope Kathleen
By the same token we could say the same about our defense budget. There are lots of things we pay our taxes to fund that we don't like, or don't think it goes to the right places. That's because we don't all agree what those right places are. You'd be pretty surprised what percentage of Americans want their tax money spent on what, and not spent on what. Unfortunately, you are merely one more voice among a few hundred million people expressing what you'd like your tax money spent on. Your say is done in the voting booth, but don't be surprised if you don't get what you vote for.

Kelly Crumpler please do. You are a zealot, but are you a Christian following in Christ’s footsteps. Ask yourself a few questions before calling me criminally insane. Are you willing to adopt these children who don’t look like you or have lifelong painful illnesses? Do you support better laws that will provide food, shelter, and medical care for these children? Do you support all life meaning you are against the death penalty? Do you support better health insurance for all so everyone can live a healthier life? Do you support an increase in Social Security so the elderly can live a life above the poverty level? Do you support different lifestyles because Christ accepted everyone? All of these things are pro life. If your stance against abortion is so strong and your stance for all of the above is just as strong, then I applaud you.

Lois McCollum I am of an age where I will not be pregnant again, nor will my daughter. I have only grandsons, so they won't be pregnant, either. But plenty of women will, and for any of a number of valid reasons are not able to care for a(nother) child. Many of them don't have the means to travel to a state or country that respects a woman's rights to her own body and to the next 18 years of her life, let alone move there. Banning abortion doesn't get rid of abortion; it simply makes it more dangerous for these women who get non-medical treatment.

Andrea George about 62% of babies given up for adoption through a private adoption agency are adopted within the first few months of birth. The remainder will be in foster care. There are about 135,000 children adopted each year but only 15% are private infant adoptions. There are over 100k kids in foster care eligible for adoption who vast majority will not be and age out due to age and special needs. The average wait for a child to be adopted is 3 years. Currently 73% of families waiting to adopt are white while over 40% of children adopted are of a different race, culture and ethnicity than both of their adoptive parents. States have laws of who can adopt and what the process is. It is a legal process and it’s also extremely expensive (Ave 30-50k) And please don’t forget when the father is known, he must also consent to the adoption.

We're now in a time when the Court sees state's rights takes precedence over individual rights as it was before the Warren Court. The court now believes if a right isn't explicitly stated in the Constitution, it doesn't count as a right.

An originalism Supreme Court means the country should have the same beliefs and enforcement of the Constitution as it was originally written. Which means a lot of people are going to find out that the Constitution no longer applies to them. Just as it did in 1789. Sadly, its going to be a very different United States than the one most of us have known in our lifetimes. One where rights no longer have meaning so long as the Court decides who is deserving of said rights.

I think Trump and his 3 lying nominees may have succeeded in ensuring that republicans or conservatives are never elected to ANYTHING again. More than 60% of our nation is vascillating between heartbroken and furious right now. This is horrifying.

Making abortion illegal in these trigger states will not stop access to abortion. It will only stop access to safe abortion. Women and girls who are unable to travel to states where abortion remains legal (namely the financially disadvantaged) are still going to get abortions. What we are going to see is horrific outcomes and death. Their blood is going to be on the hands of these legislators, scotus, and the voters who put them there. You aren’t saving babies you are butchering women & girls. Remember that Roe not only made abortions legal it made them safe.

I wonder which conservative elite will be the first to send his wife/daughter/girlfriend up north for a discreet legal abortion?

Zane Miko yeah...i can tell you have never been pregnant or are actually educated about pregnancy. There are some tests that can be done around 18 weeks, and others that are done at 20, like Level 3 scans, amnio and CVS. These are tests that have to be ordered by the OB during an appointment, then you have to make an appointment at the lab or at the specialist that performs amnio or cvs (usually at a hospital). These are not quick processes. By the time the results are analyzed and discussed with the patient, you can be easily 22 or 23 weeks along if not more.

10ºDustin Rogers -- Do you really want to be on the side of consigning poor women to back-alley abortions. Rich women will always find a way to get the reproductive healthcare they need. Far too many poor women will be left to find that care where they can. And many will die for having to do so.

A developing fetus is not a person. The living, breathing woman is.

A few questions:

If an undocumented migrant becomes pregnant in U.S. territory, then goes to her home country to give birth, is the child a U.S. citizen?
Can a woman claim a tax deduction for the developing fetus from the moment she learns she is pregnant?
Can a pregnant woman on 'welfare' type public aid programs claim another dependent, and get a larger relief payment every month?
