Actually that’s a bit misleading. What Russia has done is mount “ the pointy end” of a ballistic missile on the underside of a large MIG, attached some control surfaces and called it a hypersonic weapon. Its hypersonic in the sense that all ballistic missiles are hypersonic.
If what we’ve seen is the best they have, I’m underwhelmed.
Instead, the US is taking a different approach by developing new and advanced technologies
They are currently working on two iterations. One is a hypersonic glide vehicle, the other a hypersonic cruise missile using a scram jet. A technology that is currently beyond the Russians, and perhaps even the Chinese.
Remember that until recently the Chinese were importing Russian jet engines for their domestic J-7 fighters
