Just a thought, but why not raise the age to purchase guns from 18 to 21, much like the drinking age? And maybe even a permit process where no one can purchase or operate a weapon without being in the presence of someone who has a full permit? Laws will still be broken but we have to start somewhere. No matter what, both sides have to stop hating on each other and pointing fingers at one another but have a productive conversation with new ideas and compromise with gun control, better school security AND face the fact that there is a serious mental health crisis in this country.

All safety measures failed because they obviously were not in effect or enforced. Door was unlocked. The shooter was at the school 12 minutes before entering and yet the school was not locked down and the school must have been unaware of his presence on the property. Just about all school shootings are committed by young people under the age of 21. Raise the age to 21 years old to be able to own semi-automatic weapons of any kind. Have mandatory prosecution rules that appllies to all DAs for people arrested for illegally possessing firearms and tough mandatory sentencing of these criminals required by every judge in the country. We have high crime rates in this country because DAs and Judges refuse to do their jobs and protect the Public by sending these criminals to prison. Build more jails and prisons if they are needed to get the criminals off the streets.

Common sense Gun Laws are needed. Here is a take on that:
We no longer live in the Wild West. Gun Shows need to be outlawed. We need a national buy back plan. Bullets and buckshot can no longer be purchased without proper permits and registration. If you really need your gun you can keep it without bullets. Just like a car your gun will need to have license and permits updated. You will be required to have gun safety classes. If at any time it is determined that you are a danger to your community your guns will be confiscated until you can have needed mental health help. Once it is determined that you are no longer a threat the guns can be returned. By knowing where the guns are and monitoring the mental health of every gun owner we can move to the elimination of the “lone” gunman.

Jeffrey Sorensen I'm sorry I've never seen D/C mentioned in any abortion law. The state law however legalizing on demand abortions, not procedures.

It the constitution doesn't mentioned anything about a right to an abortion, and it was always a stretch considering that it's covered under right of privacy and seems to be the only place you have a right to privacy from the government outside the home. I don't believe abortion is inherently wrong, just not protected by the constitution.

I was actually hoping to learn something, but when I got was unprofessionalism condescension and judgment. This is who you really are and anything else is a mask you put on for patients. This has me seriously questioning your credibility. I've archived your response and the lack of professionalism. I do work in healthcare but not as I provider and I get the same training and are fully aware the professionalism needs to extend beyond your workplace.

This account appears to sock account from all appearances, and a d/c as I understand it is a procedure that would happen after the abortion in late term abortion. You haven't commented at all on the first hand account. So I'm assuming you haven't even read it?

We will only get there if and when people stop blaming guns. Put the blame where it belongs and that is mental health, this country got rid of mental health facility, mental health outpatient clinics, treatment facilities and this country choose to put in place of these removals law enforcement and jails as a cost saving remedy and now this mess is coming back to hunt the national. Now the blame on guns while law abiding citizens jump through the hoops and the mental patients are running wild. No new law would have stopped this massacre because he purchased his weapon lawfully and passed the required background check now if we had the appropriate mental health programs in place there could have been notification to the right people that hey this kid is at risk for mental health breakdown and a block would have been in place not to allow the purchase of a firearm. In regards to this massacre put the blame partly on law enforcement. When the police started to chase this individual why didn’t they notify the school to lockdown as a safety precaution, why wasn’t the school law enforcement officer on the job because they new in advance that their was going to be numerous people coming and going to the school because of the awards ceremony that was planned. You don’t remove security for a planned event you increase it. Also law enforcement didn’t engage the suspect for up to an hour meantime the suspect was going around the room killing kids! There is no way to stop gun violence because criminals don’t follow the rules that law abiding citizens do, get this law straight, even if you ban guns and sought a constitutional amendment to remove the 2nd amendment there still will be gun violence because criminals will still have guns and don’t follow the laws!

Bill Lovett illegal possession is already a crime, and felon in possession of a firearm is a jailable offence...depending on the soft on crime DA's in some metropolitan areas. None of this has any affect on illegal firearms, over a 1,000 children a year are killed by gunfire mostly by violent crime others by negligence. Look at the big picture of gun control. They want law abiding gun owners to give up the ability to possess firearms and do nothing about illegal gun's on the streets that account for the vast majority of gun deaths followed by gun suicides. Common sense is not a common virtue.

Bill Lovett There are Federal/state instituted gun purchase laws in Texas. The data base is linked to agencies/authorities that report any negative information about a person trying to obtain a firearm, which would have prevented his obtaining the firearm. No negative information, no red flag. He purchased the firearms legally. If people knew he may have been a danger and did nothing, how would anyone possibly know, if they never reported him. How would anyone had known he had a singular motivation for purchasing these firearms? he was legally entitled to obtain a firearm. Because no one that knew him acted.

Kelvin Becker It is not as easily accessible in other countries as it is in the US. It doesn’t matter if 99% are law abiding citizens. That 1% regardless of mental health issues can kill more people in a few seconds than any other method. Number of casualties matter, not the number of operators. US has the highest number of mass shootings. What are the stats showing? Number of times Americans defended themselves by a gun or were killed by it? And if a society, its government, and the police are doing such a poor job of keeping their civilians safe that they need to carry firearms themselves. I am so sorry for that country and its people.

I see here Republicans and Democrats thrashing each other. Instead of doing this, why not address the ideology issue: the gun culture has a grip on the narrative and will never subside because of the divisiveness it entails. How is it that you do not question the insane facts? There are more guns in circulation than there are citizens. 34000 people die each year by gunfire. There are more mass shootings per year than there are days. Until these and other issues are resolved, there will more mass shootings of kids, people of colour, of different gender, of different religious faith. It is unending. For those thinking the USA is the greatest country on earth, think again…

10ºNathan Sugg My point being that “designed for the military” means nothing.

Of course the AR15 is designed to kill somebody as quickly as possible. I own several ar15s and offer no apology for that fact. If I’m going to buy a gun for home defense, I don’t want second best, I’m buying the best tool for the job. If someone breaks into my home, my wife and I each have something that is easy to use, fast, accurate, and highly lethal. That something is an AR15. In that situation I’m not looking for a fair fight. I want the odds SO stacked in my favor that the other person doesn’t stand a chance of causing me or my family harm.

The fact that the military uses them is irrelevant.
