Jen Ross It is hard to raise kids as I have one that is incredibly strong willed. That's a great trait until he disagrees with how things are done here at home and then decides his way is the best way .... only to find out through consequences it's not. We can only teach our kids so much then their "free will" takes over as they leave home and as young men and women they make some bad decisions. We, as parents, can hope and pray that those decisions aren't fatal or don't cause them life long issues/challenges. I know I would do anything I can for my kids and have always taught them they are "more than" not less than but that doesn't mean society isn't going to say otherwise and beat them down. A gang mentality (fraternity/sorority) can definitely have crazy influence over young people as they are developing more of who they are going to be

Sue Stewart Taylor Hello I love your comment, I can guess that such comment comes only from nice and caring people like you..I'm really much impressed about your profile and personalities. I also admire your good sense of humor on here. I don't normally write in the comment section, but I think you deserve this compliment....I'll like to be your friend...yet, I've tried sending you a request several times but it doesn't go through. I would be so happy if you can just click on my profile and send me a request, but if you find this message embarrassing, please forgive my manners, have a safe day

Patrice Wallace Bowie this is the definition that came up for me:

“1) the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating, tasks as part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation.

2) humiliating and sometimes dangerous initiation rituals, especially as imposed on college students seeking membership to a fraternity or sorority.”

It’s the “humiliating” and “dangerous” thing that makes it hazing. Merely being given tasks to establish some kind of authority is not hazing, at least not when you being common understanding into it. Getting woken up early and mowing the lawn while seniors sip coffee is merely “paying your dues,” or as we called it in the Army, “rank has its privileges.” There’s a massive difference between an organizational pecking order and putting someone in a wheelchair from some horrific initiation ritual.

Rob Kleinschmidt That was then-this is now. I have a number of female friends who were in sororities back in the day and are wonderful moral successful people. Guys tend to get rowdier, but can say the same for frat guys I have known in the past . I will say it seems that there is less interest in being a "Greek"these days. Used to be if you weren't Greek you were a geek--might be the other way around now??? Alcohol excess has always been a problem ,but this country accepts its use while fighting legalizing marijuana tooth and nail???? Another thing we don't seem to "get".

Nancy Ambrose Reynolds my point is that this article does not indicate what the hazing was, points to a $1200 fine, and states that hazing is a misdemeanor. I am not brushing off the dangers of hazing, I’m asking because many commenters here seem to be indicating that this article is connected to or about the young man (who when I Googled is in MO) who became blind or another from Virginia who died last year due to alcohol. They are connected in the overall dangers of hazing at frats, but they are misleading that this isn’t the MO campus incident. There was an alcohol induced death/drowning incident (last fall?) at UNH, but that was not in April, so also not this incident.

10ºTreeana Garcia Rodriguez I disagree. My sorority was the first to include transgender women + men in America. We had regulated study hours that we had to get per week, a set GPA that we ALL had to maintain, were required to be in extra clubs on campus, and more. While my lifelong friends were in the same sorority, I didn’t “pay” for them. Even if I did, I would have needed to pay more because they are just that amazing. My sorority experiences paved the way for my future when it came to jobs, employment, and being a good member of society. Trust me on this one, 99% of Greek life is strictly against hazing of any kind—we even have a dedicated no hazing week (These Hands Don’t Haze) to honor and remember the legacies of the ones sadly taken from us too soon over hazing. I even attended a seminar where Penn State hazing victim’s families were speaking on the issue. There is way more good in Greek life than bad. Most of us are employed right out of college thanks to the leadership experiences our organizations provided us with. I am 24 and already have an impressive resume. I certainly don’t consider myself a “loser with cash.” Hell, most of our dues are $90 per month and are covered by a weekly on campus job. We aren’t all Alabama rush, Penn State frats, or other schools where Greek life is insane. Please don’t put all of Greek life into one basket. We are more diverse than that.
