US consumers contend with double-digit price increases at the grocery store

The cost of groceries surged by almost 12% for the year ending in May. That’s the largest year-on-year increase since 1979.

BIDINFLATION: Prices for almost everything soar under Biden admin
Taking a look at the time during the Trump administration, the prices Americans are paying for basis have gone up quite a bit.

At a recent family gathering my sister, who is building a house, told me 2x4s were cresting at $9 when they'd previously been around $3. Parents at school pick up have been talking about the increase in the weekly grocery bill, where basic trips to the market in our Brooklyn neighborhood are up by half or more. My car insurance is still just $25/month (thanks to Insurance Panda), but if you look at Democrat strongholds like Detroit and Philly, where car insurance will run you at least $300 per month, it’s easy to be pessimistic about the future of the United Socialist States of America.

And most Americans have seen the cost of fuel surge amid pipeline hacks, pipeline shut downs, and the Biden administration's push for a Green New Deal.

It's not just anecdotal evidence, the Consumer Price Index released last week shows that prices are up across the board by .8 percent for April. That's after a .3 increase for January, .4 increase for February, and a .6 increase for March. In contrast, the last few months of the Trump administration had increases as well, albeit much lower. October showed a .1 percent increase, while November and December both showed increases of .2 percent.

Taking a look at this time last year, during the Trump administration, the prices Americans are paying for basis have gone up quite a bit. Used cars and trucks are up .10 percent, groceries are up .4 percent. And while April's numbers were definitely not amazing, May's numbers look to be even worst

David Wells, I guess you prefer the fascist government the republicans/trump is trying their darest to turn this country into. I keep thinking of all the republicans have done to help the country during this time in history when the total world is going through a crisis. The Democrats have tried to present programs that keep people's heads above water, and the republicans are still working with terrorist groups to overthrow the government. Our children are slaughtered in their classrooms with AR15s that I used when I was a soldier, and voting rights are taken away in America where thousands of young Americans lost their lives so others in a distant foreign land could enjoy started by republicans, women's rights removed because she is not capable of handling her own health issues, elections corrupted by continue misinformations by republicans/trump/terrorist groups later to be unfounded lies, etc, etc. I fought for this country when she requested my service, whether I believed in the clause or not. Is America perfect/ NO, Is the Democrat party perfect/NO, but I know when I go to sleep tonight I will not wake up under a Fascist government? I think Liz Cheney says it best " trump will long be gone, but the stain on the republicans party will always be there for future generations to see/read in their history books. My question to you/David is which side will you be on? When you check back with me it is not on the battlefield.

Sure they didn't...

A whole lot of truth about gas prices, and to those that say: "the president doesn't set the price of gas"... pay close attention and maybe read it twice:
From a production worker in a refinery on the Gulf of Mexico:
"You've been lied to by the President and his phony cronies, but I want to set the record straight. I'm going to tell you the truth, so pay attention"....
1. There is enough recoverable crude oil within the continental US to supply current and projected future demand for 400+ years, and that's just the oil we know about. It doesn't account for future discoveries. That's a fact...
2. We do not need to import a SINGLE DROP of foreign crude oil. The domestic oil industry can easily meet, and even surpass domestic demand. We've done it before, and we can do it again. That's a fact...
3. The domestic oil industry currently cannot satisfy domestic demand due to oil drilling restrictions imposed by the federal government. That's a fact...
4. The price of EVERYTHING revolves around oil, and the law of supply vs demand dictates the price of oil. When oil is plentiful, commodities are cheap. When oil is scarce, commodities are more expensive. Right now, domestic oil is scarce, and the price of everything is high because of these restrictions imposed by the federal government. That's a fact…
5. We import foreign oil from countries that drill and produce it much cheaper than we're able to because they do not implement all of the environmental safeguards that we do. Their methods are FAR more destructive to the environment than ours are. That's a fact...
6. Every year, the federal government leases tracts of land to oil companies so they can explore on it for oil. If enough oil is found during exploration, the company can then apply for a drilling permit which allows them to drill a well. If no oil is found during exploration, or if the amount found is not enough to be profitable the lease expires without ever being drilled on. Leases that are active, but not being drilled on does NOT mean that oil companies are being lazy, or are trying to keep the oil for themselves, etc. etc. It means they've either explored the lease for oil and found nothing, or found oil but it's not enough to justify drilling for. That's a fact...
7. it’s not Russia's fault, or China's fault, or Ukraine, or India, or Venezuela, or Iran, or Bangladesh, or any other countries' fault as to why everything is so expensive right now. It's Joe Biden's fault, because he is suppressing the domestic oil industry for political gain.
EVERYTHING depends on crude oil... but you might not know that if you believe the lies that are being told about oil and the oil industry.
Copied and pasted and I believe every word of it.

Joel Robards And? During Biden's run he talked about his disdain for fossil fuel and his plan to follow a radical green energy agenda. The day after his election the per barrel price of oil started to rise. Oil cos, like most businesses, are all about profit. Regulations Biden put in effect day one as well as Congress calling the leaders of oil cos in and insulting them blaming them for climate change etc, has led to this catastrophe. Now Biden could use the National Defense Act and demand a price change but any way you cut it the folks running the country are directly responsible for this mess. The answer VOTE RED!

Timothy Johnson Biden’s administration is the one out there saying this is the best economy historically. They seem to gloat about it being the best but any bad aspect of it is because of Russia or some other fairy tale they come up with. Amazing because the only thing they can brag about are things they had nothing to do with. Record job? More like allowing people to go back to work. Reduced the deficit? More like republicans and a few dems stopped his BBB bill which would have increased the deficit had it passed and put us an even worse hole then we are in now

In 1979 when they calculated changes in the prices of things including groceries they used a basket of items. Today they use the basket but they allow substitutions of similar products month to month. So if cheese burgers were the item last month, they might look at hamburgers this month. The net of all this is that today's overall inflation rate is about 3-4% lower than it would be using the previous methodology.

Now there is no real issue since inflation comparisons are intended to show increases over the past year. But when used for long term comparisons there are lots of details to understand.

I remember as a kid my dad would tell this story about high prices for goods doing WW2. He states loaf bread before the war was $.35 doing the war its went up to a $1.00. Here is the kicker, after the war bread company came to the conclusion "IF THE PEOPLE WERE WILLING TO PAY $1.00 FOR A LOAF OF BREAD WHY CHANGE IT BACK" If people are willing to pay higher prices now for all goods in the marketplace when everything gets back to normal in the country what the chance the price will roll back to the lower prices? Just think about it for a minute.

10ºBrian Bilek the major oil companies are just going to sit back and await a better climate in which to do business. The current situation is too volition and unpredictable for them to invest in exploration or drilling. So they go with safe production and do the minimum. Not knowing what our government will do, not able to work through a hostile government climate, they know they can simply wait it out.

As for profits, since they don’t need to invest in research and exploration, profits can skyrocket

When COVID hit, some restaurants had massive profits as they switched totally to take out and delivery. They were able to shut down dining areas saving on HVAC, Waitstaff, bus boys, cleaning… massive cuts in expenses.
