Can we afford to ignore hate speeches, use of filthy and abusive language, derogatory remarks and defamatory statements in the name of freedom of speech in our society.

First and foremost, the right to freedom of speech and expression is not absolute and is subjected to reasonable restrictions as stated in the Indian Constitution and various other sections of IPC (Indian Penal Code) and CRPC (Criminal Procedure Code). Any fundamental right guaranteed by the Indian Constitution to its citizens can be exercised by the Indian citizens till their extended hands do not touch other person. To be precise, the fundamental right of a citizen is just one arm length and the moment it touches other person it gets curtailed.

Secondly, To maintain mental and social hygiene of the society, social etiquettes should be followed by one and all. What one does within the four walls of his/her house is exempted from outsiders intervention, only until the insider complains before the law enforcement agencies.

Thirdly, when the violators of the freedom of speech and expression are booked under the relevant sections of law and punished adequately then only the rule of law will be respected and followed by one and all. Otherwise chaos and mayhem will be rampant in our society and embarrassment and harassment of the people will become a new normal. When filthy language, abusive language, hate speeches, derogatory remarks and defamatory statements become part and parcel of our society, social evils like drug and alcohol consumption, prostitution, gambling and cheating will start surfacing on our roads and streets and thereby end in our neighbourhoods. Further crime rate is increasing at an alarming pace as our society is already facing negative impacts of Internet and social media applications such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Tinder etc. Nowadays our houses are bombarded with communal hatred through television news channels. Therefore to maintain mental and social hygiene of our society, it is a bonded duty of each and every individual to respect and behave in an approved manner and follow social etiquettes in every walk of life.

Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!
