A guide to LGBTQ summer reading for kids and teens -- from authors themselves

To highlight some exemplary LGBTQ books, CNN sought recommendations from authors whose own works have been celebrated (and, often, banned) for highlighting LGBTQ characters.

I want to respond to two ideas I’ve seen from multiple others here.

First, yes, there are other wonderful books one should read. Absolutely! Reading one book (like Dr. Zhivago) doesn’t mean you won’t read others. Variety in one’s reading is a good thing. Finding a book you can identify with in some way can be like a gateway drug to voracious reading.

Why have any lists at all? These lists are best seen as conversations with others who have recommendations — usually this is at least a little bit of vetting for quality in addition to “here’s what speaks to me.” This article is even written as such. While I love the serendipity of picking a random book associated with a subject, sometimes recommendations are helpful. When I was growing up in a rural area, lists gave me an easy way to find quality books that were likely to challenge me and, sometimes, interest me. #IAmHereUS

Thank you, CNN. I am saving this list, as I often do with booklists; I find them helpful. I wish these books and booklists like this had been available when I was a kid, but I’m glad they’re available now. They won’t change anyone’s identity or orientation, just as the zillions of books about cis-straight characters don’t make LGBTQ+ readers cuz-straight. Rather, books like these help all their readers develop empathy, and they help marginalized readers—of all kinds, actually—feel seen. They also help promote a healthy relationship with the world of books while promoting better relationships among humans. And they help budding and prospective authors know that there’s an audience for their stories, too. In short, they accomplish quite a lot.

Dwight Huth Oh sure, if you're going to redefine your words, you can say they mean whatever you want them to mean. You're wrong, but you can certainly say that.

Adult human males fall in love with other adult human males. They describe their feeling of being in love the same way an adult human male describes their feeling of being in love with an adult human female.

The same chemical reactions can be observed in male-male love, releasing of certain hormones etc. In terms of sexually, the feeling of arousal is the same, and this can be observed. The same physical responses are observed and the same release of chemicals as in male -female sexual attraction.

Any aspects of this that can be observed and tested, demonstrate that it is exactly the same. There is no difference in chemical responses.

Scott Weber i do not hate homosexuals i can like the person but hate the sin. If God and Jesus do not accept it nobody who is religious will and they most certainly do not want their kids being corrupted by a book. Hense why tv programs have age restrictions on what parents want their kids to learn not so? You want to sin mate its your choice i am not the keeper of your soul but don't use that sin to try corrupt innocent kids from what God hates most and that is homosexuality and thats a fact for Jesus to rebuke it then you must know there is nothing that calms Gods wrath in regards to that life style. I do not hate you or anyone i am stating facts

Gmck Farah All species and living things have multiple genders, many more than two, but each species, over time, due to evolution, as determined one way to procreate. That doesn't mean that the world doesn't have homosexual or asexual species. In fact, there are more intersexed people in the world than redheads. Also, homosexuality was considered a high honor or blessing before Constantinople.

Procreation doesn't have much to do with social relationships in most species.

Jesus is the most-recent sun-messiah and the stories of Horus, Mithra, Dionysus, Attis, Krishna, Tammuz and other sun-messiah stories existed before the story of Jesus. The Bible and Christian holidays, crucifixion, the ark of the covenant, virgin birth, resurrection, and many other things are identical to the sun-messiah stories that long pre-date Christianity by thousands of years.

So, if you want to cite your misunderstanding of astronomy for a reason why you misunderstand living species, go ahead.

The enlightened will be ready for the next "age" which begins in year 2150, the Age of Aquarius.

Moses told the people not to worship the BULL is a story about moving from the age of Taurus "Bull" (about 4200 BCE to 2150 BCE) to the age of Aries (the Ram). From 0000 - 2150 AD we are in the age of Pisces, the fish...hence your fish Jesus car emblems. There is a reason for the 12 disciples... as there are 12 houses in astronomy to track the sun. There is a reason the Vatican point directly east to where the Sun rises and begins tracking north on December 25th. The three stars pointed to Sirius... or as you say the "three kings."

We are all a spectrum, as all humans begin as female. Procreation does not define a species social constructs.

I only sound ridiculous to the uneducated.

Please do tell me more... I'll be here. ;-)
