1ºKings Point '62 engineer here. I was engine cadet on the Moore/McCormic passenger ship the SS Argentina in 1960. One night at sea, one of the ship's crew, a male hair stylist, came into the stateroom I shared with my male roommate (no women cadets in those days) and attempted to molest me. I woke up, jumped up and caught a glimpse of him as he went out the door. The next morning at coffee time I shared my adventure with some engineers I was friendly with. Subsequently, these engineers had a quiet 'chat' with Nicky the hair stylist. No more problem. I realize that my situation then in no way comes close to what today's young women face in an industry with the history and reputation that the Merchant Marine has. It's going to take serious action and enforcement from the ships' officers and crew, the Shipping Companies, the Unions and the USCG. Don't know what type of self-defense training the young women get at the Academy as Plebes. Pepper spray???????????? In my experience the "Sea Year" was and is a vital part of King's Point's excellent program.
2ºLucille Hoerle Lu, I never told Mom that I had gotten shot in '66 in DaNang, S. Vietnam. But in 5/68 when I was Chief engineer on the Cuba Victory, the ship was mined and seriously damaged at Cat Lai in the Saigon River. Fortunately the ammo we were unloading did not explode but there were 5 fatalities. I thought the story might show up in a newspaper so I sent the folks a telegram. Helen and I are fine, Jen and Jonny had a bit of Covid but are fine now. I am (Helen too) having a great time with Mylo (4). I am still riding my old BMW motorcycle - great for the LA traffic............... Hope you, Ken and your family are all well.
