Doctors worry that online misinformation will push abortion-seekers toward ineffective, dangerous methods

After the draft decision on Roe v. Wade was leaked in May, this doctor noticed a disturbing turn in the online conversation around abortion.

Carlos Ocampo scientifically, a fetus cannot survive outside the body until about 24 weeks gestation so it is not a viable human being until that time. The thinking that it has a “soul” from conception is a religious belief. We have separation of church and state in this country which means that our laws are not founded in any religious doctrine. I probably would never have an abortion, but I have lived long enough to know that there are women in vastly different situations than me with vastly different beliefs. It is not my job to tell them what to do with their bodies. Nine months is a long time. Think about the psychological trauma for the woman that is forced to carry a fetus to term for that time. You can’t force someone to do that! In addition, it puts a great deal of stress on the body and one’s finances. As a man, you will never experience this but think about passing a nine pound bowling ball out your rectum! I had a friend whose daughter almost bled to death after delivery! Delivery is a serious matter! You cannot force people to go through pregnancy and delivery! It’s much more intense than you can ever imagine! Before viability, I think it’s a matter of personal privacy and choice because it is a serious medical condition the woman is being forced to go through.

Marisa - Well, let’s start with Union Pacific v Botsford, and the Court’s holding that there is “no right held more sacred than the right of every individual to the possession and control of their own person”.

In Skinner, the Court found that forcing a prisoner to undergo sterilization violated the 14th amendment. This was also derived from the penumbras and emanations of the Bill of Rights. Further more, that 9th amendment states that the rights enumerated under the Bill of Rights, are not exhaustive.

Then let’s look at Eisenstaedt, where the right for unmarried couples to purchase contraceptives was a fundamental right under the 14th amendment. Again, the rights under the Bill of Rights are, as written, not meant to be exhaustive.

Where Roe got it wrong (in my opinion), was balancing the fundamental right of control of one’s person with some non-existent state’s interest.

I mean… that’s a quick answer. It would take hours to type out a full extensive history with my one finger.

Republicans want abortions. They simply don't want everyone to take them. Look at birth rates and the future demographic changes of America. It shows a growing black and brown population. If a racist or white supremacist can't outright kill us anymore, what other strategies do you think they will use to keep us from growing the way we are??? Think about it, how else would a racist keep us from reproducing and having more stability. They do it from within. Black people glorify rap music that talks about us killing each other. Struggling black communities follow that music, which leads to shootings and unstable households, which leads to more abortions. They want abortions. But they want to place them in communities with more people of color.

Tom Frye You understand once that baby is born, it goes home with whoever had it right? Even if it’s someone that’s going to abuse it and not feed it and not love it? Do you understand that all of those issues are related? Do you understand that most women get abortions because they don’t have the resources? Meaning they just don’t have it in them, and it’s none of your business why they want to get an abortion. But any woman’s reason is a good enough reason for me and it should be for you to if you lOvE tHeM so much

Paul Whyte lol. Banning the extremely barbaric act of abortion has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with science. When roe v wade was wrongly forced on us by activist justices, medical science on human reproduction and development was severely lacking. With the advances in medical technology we now know that all human life begins at conception. The moment the egg is fertilized it has a full set of DNA making it a unique human being. When can also see how horrendous and cruel abortions are to the unborn child.

There is no such thing as separation of church and state in our constitution or in our laws nor should there be.

Jamie Dawn Schlanser "You don’t care about those unborn fetuses lol" This might be the clearest example of psychological projection that I've ever come across.

"You do nothing for anyone that needs help" Theorizing. You're making remarks like this for the exact same reason you're asking about my personal life. You have no clue.

Why don't you respond once rather than 5 times consecutively? It reads like emotion when you get repetitive in that way. I called you out on placing the unborn in the back of the conversation this entire time, and then you magically included them within the conversation immediately after. It might have simply been a coincidence (Nah). You might not like it, but this topic is primarily about the unborn who you don't care about. Maybe that's why you're struggling?

Remember that we're talking about a developing life going through the exact same stages that YOU & I did.

The idiots who seek to completely ban abortion (too many's definitive end goal) and the 'good abortion' people complicit in the slippery slope of severely restricting access still don't get it: they've only made it harder to do it safely. True reduction of abortion involves an empowered populace aware of and fully able to access prevention methods with a health and welfare-focused national system that leaves few behind. Instead of doing things with that as a goal they've stymied and shuttered institutions that basically didn't want kitchen table bleed outs and bleached out uteruses. The age of Google is primed to make things worse

Jason Steward Really? What is wanted is more use of safe and effective birth control other than abortion(killing babies). When Margaret Sanger(a racist) formed Planned Parenthood her goal was to eliminate the babies born in black communities. To those black communities, she was a godsend. Abortion clinics were always placed in black communities, this is nothing new. But here we are 8 decades later and safe forms of birth control have been developed and PP says they are free yet they continue to push abortions. Why is that? GREED$$$.... Are women(and men) so uninformed or just lazy and irresponsible that they would choose abortion over contraceptives? Abortion isn't being forced on black and brown communities by racists or white supremacists to reduce reproduction, its the chosen form of birth control in those communities. #1 reason for abortion? Convenience.

Jamie Dawn Schlanser Babies should be aborted because abuse happens. At least the baby which you care nothing about made the conversation this time. You definitely don't avoid recognizing the existence of a baby when called out on it. Congrats. I had to force you to address them directly. It's terrible when abuse happens, and your answer is to abort. Who did the baby abuse?

You said "I have not once negated the existence of an unborn baby," and then came back with the label "a ball of cells." Nice save by throwing "forming into a baby" onto the end of that comment. You admittingly care nothing about the unborn in the womb despite 63 million abortions & counting since 1973.

10ºEileen Andersen happy to debate when life begins. That’s a completely different debate.
States rights and federalism is a debate of constitutional law and isn’t subject to emotion or opinion. If any issue or subject isn’t mentioned in the constitution or any of the amendments to our constitution then the federal government has to power or authority over the issue. It is referred to the voters of each state to decide. Under Roe 7 Justices from 1973 decided the abortion laws for ALL women and men regardless of their vote, will or beliefs. Now, ALL WOMEN and men have their voice returned to decide the issue with their votes in who the elect to represent them and their will and beliefs. The federal government said that they have no federal authority on the issue and never did. The Judiciary said there is no federal authority. It is a state matter. That’s proper & contextual application of constitutional law that has finally taken precedent over liberal judicial political activism.
