1ºSakhele Tabata South Korea and North Korea are divided due to America - true, but if we weren't divided we'd have been conquered by Kim Il Sung, who was North Korean dictator then. I much prefer this over what might have happened if the US (and the UN) did not intervene.
South Korea is the first (and last) instance where the UN deployed their army and actually made a successful output. The then dividing of our country saved the lives of 60 million people who's lived beneath the ceasefire line ever since.
And by the way...we're not the same people with North Korean people now. At least that's how a lot of us feel now. But on a national level we have to pretend we still feel we're of the same race...gives us more reason to assert our ownership of the land when they fall, because I bet everything China's not gonna want to kindly hand over the land to us when that happens.
2ºDiana Furness there were definitely deep rooted problems not with only the officers the entire chain of command from the Supervisors, Leading Petty officers , Chiefs Division officers Dept Heads XO and CO. Those 20 personnel already disciplined were given censure letters pretty much their careers are over this unfortunately will carry over should any of them apply for a Govt civilian job. The Dept of the Navy is not done with investigating, now have to wait at the conclusion of the sailor's court martial there will be others that will be disciplined .
I was in for a 20 year career in the Navy when you have cases like this one the fall out is far more serious. We have list a multi billion dollars shi which will never be rebuilt or replaced , I feel for the crew that was assigned to this ship at the time caught up in the middle of. A big mess from hell, those sailors lost everything they had uniforms, personal items of sentimental value and worse of all trust in the command that put their lives at serious serious risk, I can guarantee those sailors that were on board the day of the massive fire are emotionally scarred for life
3ºKerstin Tuskan The American Army and Air Force are both stronger than China, yes (plus a huge pile of atomic bombs) but the Navy is where the US has a massive advantage over them. The US is practically in control of all the oceans on Earth. This kinda 'forces' island countries like Japan and Britain to ally with them. So when we think of it in another way, if China somehow develops a much stronger navy...(although that's unlikely to happen because the US is constantly kicking away the ladder) things might change, who knows. Plus it's good for the US too because an alliance with Japan and Britain grants them significantly more influence over Asia and Europe, they're both military superpowers.
4ºDavid Bergmann So the base fire dept is responsible for the massive failure and maybe base CO for ensuring they were qualifiedto fight such a fire. Not sure why ship CO/XO/CMC is punished if it was turned over to base fire dept.. if maybe Ship Repair facility did not comply with maintaining fire fighting systems were up and running as they should be in an availability then your talking about the Govt agency who was overseeing this avail. I'm sure there's plenty of blame to go around. This is a reminder that ultimately the ship needs to vigilant to be prepared to fight any casualty even in the yards. I belive the 8010 tech man along with many more ensure that the ship is in compliance.
5ºYepez Suarez yes I completely agree but don't you agree that we spend wayy too much money on defense spending every year?? China is 2nd globally behind the US in defense spending and they spent equivalent to $293 billion US dollars. And Russia spent equivalent to $65 billion US dollars on defense. So we just don't need to be spending almost $800 billion US dollars a year on defense we can cut it in half and still be fine. That money we spend on defense comes out of our pockets in the form of taxes. And if the military gets their way they'll be getting over $1 trillion US dollars a year and at the rate its been going up we'll probably be there soon
6ºThe majority of arm chair quarterbacks on here have no clue what it is like when a ship is in for upgrades and repairs. For one usually the full crew of the ship isn't aboard. Second there are a lot of temporary services running through wire ways, doors and hatches. While those services are to be able to be quickly removable in case of on board casualties. Those that 8nstall them know where the quick connection points are. Ships force (SF) may not, or other yard workers may not either.
While SF drill and train for firefighting, drills and training only instill how your react and build experience in a controlled environment, in hopes that you'll execute your role properly. When the real thing happens it can be a very different story.
Most in here commenting may have never been aboard a ship or sub, I can guarantee you could have someone take you down to an MMR or AMR on a ship and you'd be lost in seconds on where to go to get off. Now add heat amd smoke filling these compartment and it's shear chaos.

8ºJack Mcfadden of course there is no way all of the ships repairs lockers are stocked with fire fighting equipment including fire proof curtains. Those repairs lockers are not to be emptied out even when a ship is on a shipyard. There is going to be further fallout after that sailor's court martial, I can guarantee 100% he is going to testify at his trial which this the Navy's biggest problem he is going to spill the beans and sing like a bird and tell everything what was going on leading up to fire, there are crew members already in legal.hot water contradicting statements under oath to investigators and that will come to light at that trial.
