How to stay cool without air conditioning

Whether you’re without power, enduring extreme heat or trying to save money, there are ways to feel comfortable without artificial cooling.

If biden keep putting America last. You think January 6th was bad. You aint seen nothing we will make that look like a little girl's picnic. We will kick you out of office and arrest all of you based on the Constitution in all your illegal activity. We will Go back to the rule of law and clean house just wait for it! You will go straight to jail. By the way January 6th was staged by your people! Not ours. We abide by the law. And when more evidence comes out about this laptop people will be going to prison. Unlike the left Communist we abide by the law the real law of the Constitution. Unlike the left we are not racist or fascist nazis. That's left wing propaganda lie. Civil war is coming thanks to democrats. We Will win the upcoming elections.

Amy Cichowski comparing apples to oranges only makes you look ridiculous. Let’s just ignore climate change and look at other factors.

People lived in caves or shaded overhangs near water sources, both of which helped keep cool. They wore next to nothing in hot weather. Later, the houses were built in strategic places with plenty of shade trees. The houses allowed airflow for cooling and ventilation. They were built according to the climate in that location. Roads were dirt and yards were grass.

Now people live in communities with few trees for shade. They live in airtight homes. They have thick insulation. They live in apartments and cities. It’s unsafe to leave your windows open in many places. People wear clothes year-round. Our building materials- concrete and asphalt- retain heat.

Just a few examples of why your statement is so terribly off base.

I grew up in an old farm house in central Indiana we had an oil stove in the living room for heat and no AC at all. Almost no one had AC back then. We managed it. My bedroom was upstairs and yes, it got over 100 quite often. I would watch the curtains for movement so I could make the most of the small breeze. I remember going to Florida and being amazed by all the signs saying “we have AC” on the doors. It was still new and wonderful. Now, I only turn my AC on when it is over 90 or very humid and I am perfectly fine. A doctor told me years ago that humans are slowly loosing their ability to self regulate our body temps because of artificial environments and I totally believe that.

Jennifer McCampbell Huh. I grew up in a time where air conditioners were nearly non-existance. I didn't live in a cave, my house wasn't build in a strategic place with shade trees, my house didn't allow for airflow for cooling and ventiliation, and my roads were not dirt, and in fact I lived in a city with plenty of concrete all around me. And everyone wore clothes. So my statement isn't off base. It is easier to live with air conditioning and I wouldn't want to go back to living without it, but it doesn't justify the level of whining going on in this thread.

Leslie Smith I don't understand why so many people are gloating over the situation in Texas or for that matter throughout the Southwest. The rapid industrial growth in Texas is a huge factor in the calculus of energy use. The real problems begin with simplistic answers to complex problems. Simply building more fossil fuel or nuclear plants isn't going to help. Without water which is becoming more scarce they can't operate. This could very well have national impacts as the Southwest is the hub for agriculture, ranching, refining and chemical manufacturing. No water, no steam, no turbines turning, no electricity. If that system collapses the entire US will be hurting on a massive scale. A few electric cars will be the least of our concerns even for those of us here in NY.

From a time I didn't have a/c :If u can hang out in air conditioned places, libraries, stores ECT. during the hottest part of the day. Keep curtains closed during the day in the rooms the sun is facing Fans in the windows..cool clothes on your neck, drink a lot of cool water. At night take a cool shower before going to bed. We have also put our top sheet and pillows in the freezer before to help get to sleep.
Now that I have AC not going to lie I have it going pretty much constantly 63when I'm home and during the day. 70 when I'm gone. 67 at night. After many years of not having it in going to enjoy it while I got it

Reminds me of 1997 when I was a child, we had box fans, window units that took a break every once in awhile. We played outside to keep cool in the evenings then shower and box fans, I thank God for that experience. And my children are very blessed, they live in a new home with central A/C but they need to know that life happens and we must deal with changes and we won't always be comfortable. Everything we have today I thank God because many times we don't thank him for what we have that other less fortunate people do.

DeLayne Jack regarding the lights, if you’ve switched over to LED, then heat radiation isn’t occurring or at least is a negligible amount. One of the many shortfalls of incandescent and CFL is that most of the energy used to illuminate is given off as heat and only a small fraction is to produce light that we can actually see. LED only provides our visible spectrum and thusly does not produce much heat. This is why they’re energy efficient from the start. Incandescent and CFL are inefficient as they produce a wide array of light, much of which we cannot see.

Frank Jacobs here’s a list of 50 failed predictions or 50 reasons not to go along with what you hear abt the very politically driven global climate disaster. Im not a climate denier and I know we still need to do our part to preserve our planet, but things are likely not as extreme or dire as you are led to believe. Kind of exactly like Covid 19. They use fear nonstop and of course people believe it.
