The group operators are accused of recruiting people to write fake or misleading product reviews in exchange for money or free items, Amazon said.

Audrey Zuber I bought a gaming chair my friend and their partner highly recommended to me after having theirs for 3 years and when I got mine in, the quality and assembly was entirely different than theirs. It came with this weird residue all over it, already had bubbles in the material, and didn’t even assemble properly. When I looked at the Amazon reviews, over the last two years, ratings went down for that exact reason. They likely switched manufacturers to save money and the quality went down. It’s garbage how Amazon is run (every aspect of it, especially their warehouses).

I live in San Francisco and this is how many high school kids here make extra money by writing ‘fake’ reviews on Amazon. They usually are paid with gift cards according to the number of reviews they post. The product is sent to them for free. They write the reviews and then the gift cards are mailed. It’s a shame but very true. The admins are reliable and don’t cheat the kids and really send them the gift cards after they post their allotted number of reviews because they fear the kids posting negative reviews for not getting paid. Other kids hear about it and next thing ya’ know all these kids here are doing it because they see the other teenagers actually getting paid with gift cards. They get gift cards to CVS, Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Round Table… places like that.
