How a vacation to Hawaii can be relaxing for tourists -- and harmful to its residents | CNN

Love Hawaii? The best way to appreciate the island is to stay home, locals say. This Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT #UnitedShades explores how tourism is wreaking havoc.

I recommend the book “To Steal A Kingdom” for all who wish to experience Hawai’i so you can learn how Hawai’i is a sovereign kingdom that was literally stolen from its people by US businesses and Christian missionaries. I was recently on a flight where a flight attendant noticed my book and happily exclaimed “That’s my Queen!” upon noticing Queen Liliuokalani on the cover. We had a very brief conversation about Hawai’i and he thanked me for learning about his people and land. I could tell he was not accustomed to white mainland folks doing so, which is a shame.

Hawai’i is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and its people and culture are world treasures. It is a luxury and a privilege for anyone of us to visit there, and I am deeply grateful whenever I do. If you go, behave as a guest, and show respect to your hosts. Be kind, and to Native Hawaiian people, be generous. Act like you know how lucky you are to visit, and leave your ego at home. Hawai’i does not belong to us, nor should it.

The same is true for Florida. And actually the entire country. Keep inviting more population in until all the resources are used up with more pollution to boot with more people. Incentives for people to have more kids for more welfare too. Become the third world nation the US aspires to be under Democrat control. Think about it. Higher home prices equals more taxes for the same living space. More rents. Higher food and commodity prices for more demand. Less wages with people being easily replaceable with cheaper labor. THE RICH LOVE IT. Google "the party of the rich". You will be surprised.

World traveler here and I don't care. You don't say no to money so I don't so no to visiting. This isn't an individual's problem, it's a business and state issue but, definitely not the travelers as the people in the article suggest. Who says the best thing you can do for this problem is to not come at all. I am American, live in NJ, and that statement alone offends me. You, Hawaiian's are Americans too. See NJ gets a lot of income from tourism as well. Figure it out. We do and have. Stop placing stuff on the individual. It's your state, vote in politicians that do what you seek. Otherwise, like every other state, take your money and leave us travelers alone. We aren't the issue.

Beth Pawluk ah ofc since they aren’t the only ones to be invaded that makes everything completely fine. Let’s just ignore the fact that it was the white Americans with wealth that invaded and took over the native Hawaiians land and autonomy, making those who could not leave their homeland bound to a system of economy that demands they keep themselves fed and alive by entertaining their white and/or wealthy descendants. Ofc we can do nothing about it now, so let’s just let the white and/or wealthy frolic on their land. We, the land of the free, could never think of giving them back their land.

It's the same for Florida lol y'all can't be singled out because your an island. Your not that special lol Your still a state of the United States. The entitlement your talking about is a legal right. You are entitled being a citizen to travel to different states within our nation. 75% of Florida revenue comes from tourism just like you. Understand the difference between "entitled" and "respect"! Everyone should have respect for mother nature and her historical value's plain and simple but truth is Florida and Hawaii would never survive without it's tourism! Be careful what you wish for!

Here's the dirty secret, what they really don't want is poor tourists. Now that the have clamped down on Airbnb they're just making is so only the richer tourists can come. You're quite welcome if you spend enough money there. There's plenty of hypocrisy to go around. Nobody should own those islands, like nobody should own national parks; they should belong to all the people. Find common sense ways to manage things. Require long term reservations like other places with scarce resources like National Parks do. Telling people to just 'go away' and not visit Yosemite or the Grand Canyon would be asinine.

Daree Austin Monkeypox was discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research. Despite being named “monkeypox,” the source of the disease remains unknown. However, African rodents and non-human primates (like monkeys) might harbor the virus and infect people.

The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970. Prior to the 2022 outbreak, monkeypox had been reported in people in several central and western African countries. Previously, almost all monkeypox cases in people outside of Africa were linked to international travel to countries where the disease commonly occurs or through imported animals. These cases occurred on multiple continents.

Kim Bonner Oh Kim, while I agree sacred land isn’t the same as too many shoobies on my boardwalk, did you happen to see the brief description CNN included in their post? Key word, “locals”. This isn’t exclusive to Hawaiian Natives, this is ALL residents of Hawaii including the retirees, military families, etc.

At 14.6 million tourists annually, I’d consider Hawaiians lucky. Florida had 120 million roll through here in 2021. We’re also the new hub for far right loony’s who pledge allegiance to Fuhrer Trump and follow him in their monster trucks wherever he goes. Also, Alabama borders us to the north. If you Hawaiian folks think you got a tourist/Americanization problem, oh let me tell ya..

Yes when we lived there for 3 yrs while husband was in the military we often felt “not welcome or accepted” Our kids were bullied in school. It was the, we grew here you flew here attitude. We bought a home and paid taxes like everyone else. Kids went to public school. But we were Haoles. Although it is just non Hawaiian the tone was not nice. We were simply not really welcome. Many don’t want the military there using the land.
It is sad to see how the prices and tourism is pricing the natives out of their own islands. Jobs are all but construction/labor or tourism. Houses are I affordable. Our own house that we bought for 280k once is now 800k for 1600 ft 2 story with no property. Most locals we knew have left to the mainland. Whole situation is sad..,

10ºJT Thompson how about y’all just stay in your place and stop treating the world and its people like your personal toilet bowl for profit. I know that’s your culture and you have absolutely no ties to this planet but y’all gotta be tired. At least slow down some because as much as your ppl stay looking in the sky y’all still haven’t found another suitable planet for you too diarrhea poop on nor the means to get there. We get y’all aren’t indigenous to this planet but geez. Y’all really got the bubble guts on this rock and it stinks bad.
