1ºYes! Watched it happen and those that work in the hospitality business there are really starting to struggle too. The natives AND the transients!! It really all started when the laws changed who can buy and own land. Overseas investors bought up a lot of land. Air BnB’s took over. Priced everyone out of rent and buying homes! There has to be some sort of new laws in place or it won’t work in the future anyway. Who will wait on you and clean your hotel room if they can’t afford to pay rent?? They did pass some new restrictions on air bnb’s this past year finally. Now those that reserved them for vacation are being cancelled on last minute. It’s becoming a real disaster.
2ºTerry Ruiz Yet the app you are using is from a blue state, as is the cpu and operating system on the device you are using. The internet you are using to trsnsmit your post also developed in a blue state. The car you are driving was also developed in a blue state as was the navigation, computer ignition, satelite radio, and airbag. Without blue states driving innovation and the economy, life would be a lot harder for you and your federal taxes would be a lot higher as the lost revenue would cause your taxe rate to increase. At the same time, most of the food we eat is from red states. BOTH are needed for this country to exist. To diminish either shows both a lack of insight and lack of intelligence
3ºKimberly Roberts it’s a bit of a catch 22. As a mainlander, I relied on affordable lodging (Airbnb, Vrbo, etc) to be able to go to HI and spend my money on things like food, transportation, tourism, etc. On Oahu (not sure about all of the islands), they’ve changed the law so that I can no longer rent an affordable Airbnb. Now, I have to stay in Waikiki or Honolulu () in order to stay on island. Luckily, my friend lives in Haliewa and I can stay with her if I want to visit the island. I priced rooms in Waikiki and Honolulu, and tbh the least expensive stays are still out of my price range. Meaning, I can’t come spend my money, thereby supporting the local economy, not to mention enjoy one of the most beautiful places in the world…
I wish there were a way to make it affordable for all Americans to visit, while maintaining rent levels so that locals can afford to live there as well.
4ºThis is a funny article. One of the Japanese had taken the islands. The native population would have been wiped out. So be thankful the Americans protected the islands. Two decolonization is the stupidest new idea. If you want to go native give up the trappings of western culture give up the modern medicine the modern convinces of life. Select land and go live there. Reject modern life. Three don’t come visit the island and when the economy collapses due to lack of tourism? Please white ppl we need you back come back please? Are natives all over North America the same? Complaints but sticking their hand out for a handout?

My friend (the one who lives on island) is getting married there, and since she’ll have family staying at her place, I’ve got to find affordable lodging and that’s turning out to be impossible. Not to mention, when I get out of the airport in Honolulu, I can’t wait to get as far from Waikiki/Honolulu as possible! I want the beautiful views and the island’s local charm and beauty, not the concrete jungles of Waikiki/Honolulu. So sad that I’m going to be forced to stay in that area if I want to visit and attend my friend’s wedding. Tbh, I am seriously doubting if I’ll even be able to go for more than a night or two. And that’s a long enough flight that I’m not to keen on only staying a day or two, ya know? Yah, just wish there was a balance is all.
6ºWilliam Sherman I get that this happens everywhere, but it's never been at such a fast pace. My own state used to be affordable to live in, but now everyone except upper middle class and above are being priced out of the housing market across the state. Rents in most suburban parts of my state used to be very affordable up until last year and suddenly they began to skyrocket hitting an all time high of approx 40% total income for someone earning slightly above an average wage. For those earning less than above average wages, they're being priced out of safe urban and suburban neighborhoods completely and we don't have much rental opportunities in rural areas to begin with anyway. This is just not sustainable anymore, so I completely understand what the locals in HI are talking about here.
7ºChas Coffman right now though there is another detail that is affecting the price of hotels going up too. That detail is the island had strict rules during Covid to protect the residents and a lot of people are now coming to the island (rebooked their vacation from 2020-2021). It is a hugh difference in the amount of visitors that are coming in comparison to before Covid. I personally believe it may level out some in the next couple years. They have plenty of visitors right now. There needs to be a cap unfortunately. Believe me I lived there. We had plenty of empty seats at the restaurants I worked at. Now! You have to make reservations way ahead of time.

In the few expensive areas it looks like Gorgeous hotels and beaches in many other towns you can see Homelessness rising like crazy, because of Democrat policies…you see peoples livelihood destroyed because of Democrat policies and you’ll not hear anyone from Hawaii say Democrat policies helped us unless they are Super wealthy. You can work 4 jobs and still be in poverty because of Democrat Policies…
I’m a native and I support Real Americans who want change which right now are Republicans. But we can’t vote any republicans into office of Governor or Lt Governor because our Voting system was hijacked years ago and rigged for decades. The Democrat Mayor, Mufi Hanneman pushed through a rail system that is out dated and has defects already and they’re not done building it yet, it was supposed to have been completed before 2020. Billions of dollars over budget. No real oversight. Failing crumbling infrastructure we had 3 sink holes within a month on the same stretch of road that is riddled with pot holes if you make $100,000 a year you are just a tad bit above poverty level in Hawaii.
My friends ran as Republicans to fix this state they of course lost the race accept maybe one.
