Couples are swapping out natural diamonds in rings for larger, cheaper lab-made ones

Not all couples who upgrade are focused only on switching to a larger sized stone.

I think if I were getting married today a stainless steel right that is very plain would be my choice. I'd also choose a dress I could use later because spending a thousand dollars on a one use dress is ridiculous. The wedding industry is so overpaid for a one day thing that putting a high ticket price on the day became the norm. Now it's time to scale back and ask yourself if you spend maybe $200 would your love be diminished or does a Kardashian wedding for a million mean more? I'd choose the $200 real love option. You can start your married life without as much debt. That makes real sense today.

I definitely would want a ring however I wouldn’t want a big wedding maybe like 30 people all at one location, or at courthouse and then a reception in a backyard. I would rather use that money on a house, or a vacation or remodeling the house of some sort. And I would love like a big potluck, maybe even like a taco truck and I would ask people to donate for charity, instead of buying us stuff that I don’t need. And I would like people to bring some sort of alcohol drink and then maybe like long picnic tables and music and just good friends

Alexa Salvesen I HAD a diamond ring (previous husband). Couldn't sell it--I ended up having the gold melted for another piece and reset the diamond, which I still have in a nugget pendant that I never wear. I see NO point in diamonds, and frankly the kind of diamond that I had was NOT going to appreciate in value over time. Most are SOOOOO overpriced at retail that they're never going to bring what was paid for them. Oh, and perhaps I should mention that the marriage that came w/ a diamond only lasted about 4 years, most of them pretty miserable. So there's that.

Alina Man I'm perfectly chill, thank you very much. Disagreeing with you and questioning your stances has zero bearing on my mental or emotional state.

I just find your insistence on retail value for something that is, at its core, a completely unnecessarily luxury to be very strange. It's adornment, frippery, fun. Even if you pay a fortune for it that's still all it is. So why not spend less money on manmade and get more enjoyment out of it?

I've got a $30 topaz necklace that looks every bit like and expensive sapphire. I've also got a very fine set of natural pearls. Guess which one I wear and enjoy more often?

Most of such rings are, aesthetically, ultimate kitsch. Diamonds are fine just for their own value nothing more. Diamonds don't measure true, genuine feelings. Otherwise, people would never cheat their "loved" ones once they buy a diamond ring.
A much deeper aspect is the one of bloody diamonds. Not all of them are bloody any more. There's a whole spectrum of different ways to exploit children, people in general - in Africa, Asia and elsewhere - cheap labour, wars,... Common people don't have much choice so, they take whatever job they can, while the buyers from the rich countries all around the World can really decide whether it would be profitable for the mine owners and fashion brands to deal with wealth or convenience. If rich didn't buy, they wouldn't exploit the poor...

Why would you jeopardize your children's security? NO other president has done this, he’s an idiot who played with your children’s security in the future. Why did he take sensitive info on French president Macron to his home??? Trump put the sources and methods of the US intelligence community at risk by taking highly sensitive material home. If enemies know how we spy, they can win and can hack YOUR information. AND Intelligence community told the Justice Department and the National Archives about potentially missing sensitive documents.
Biden cut off Trump's access to intelligence briefings, a courtesy extended to all former presidents.
"What value is giving him an intelligence briefing?" Biden said. "What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?"

Alexa Salvesen sorry to correct you but there is about a 300% markup on jewelry. You will never get close to what you paid for it. My first engagement ring was 3/4 carat I could have gotten a full carat but the smaller stone was a more perfect stone and that’s what I wanted. Fast forward three years and I had a chip in the diamond. I pulled out all the certificates on my
Ring and want into the jeweler. I thought I’d have to break my finger before you chipped a diamond. Well for $250. The could ground it now to a 1/2 carat. For my 2nd engagement I wanted a CZ set in gold. My husband hated that idea and on our 2nd Anniversary got me a real diamond. Well that 2nd diamond has a crack in it. After 40 years I very seldom wear it. As for receptions if people would start doing more economical weddings the prices would come down. Coworker of mine got married in the same place I had my Fathers funeral luncheon. The wedding was double per person. Exact menu.

Angie Seow No you would not be able to tell because lab grown diamonds consist of actual carbon atoms arranged in the characteristic diamond crystal structure. Since they are made of the same material as natural diamonds, they exhibit the same optical and chemical properties. The end result is identical it’s simply the process of establishing a controlled environment to obtain the diamond that is different. If anything lab-grown diamonds are typically nicer looking because why grow a flawed product? In nature you have to take what you can get and make the most out of it with cut, clarity, color, and carat weight.

Tory Thompson and absolutely to each their own! You did say why did “everything” have to be about resale value. I never said that was a dealbreaker I was simply stating something to factor into consideration. At the end of the day, the phone people are using, the clothes people are wearing are probably made by some 12-year old in some remote countries. It’s hypocrisy through and through when they say it’s because they want to be “ethical” and they don’t want “blood on their hands” so they choose man-made. That’s not the reason. The real reason is because they do not want to pay the price for it. If the price of a real diamond was cheap as chips, I bet you these “ethical” people would switch camp in a heartbeat!
