The slain Memphis teacher never finished her morning run before she was abducted. More than 2,000 people will finish it for her Friday morning

Thousands of people have signed up to run in an event meant to emphasize that women should be able to safely run any time of day after a Memphis woman was kidnapped while running last week and later found dead.

Too bad we don't treat everybody the same way. Good people unfortunately die every day.

But let us instead make us all aware how it is not safe to go jogging alone at 4 AM. That ISNT blaming but it is saying be diligenct and aware, not to run alone. This message seems to have gotten lost. We can only control our own actions for safety. As much as we SHOULD have the freedom, it just isn't safe. And not trying to be mean but being an "heiress" doesn't make you less susceptible because to a predator you are nothing. RIP, my dear and to ALL victims who lost their lives. ️️️️

I was on my way 3 blocks to the store and a masked man jumped from behind a building on a construction site at dusk and grabbed me but somehow I think he knew me and let me go and ran off. Did he know me? His first time? Who knows. Am I going to walk past a construction site again to prove my arrogance and defiance or go across the street where it is safe, nit tempt fate. Just a thought.

Sonja Curry-Johnson I gave you a list of things “You” can do
This feminism ideals have blinded a lot of you and end up sounding selfish

Black people have been crying about Police brutality for centuries, yet for something with a “known” cause and solution, nothing has been done
There have been cries for human trafficking to stop but nothing has changed
We have been begging the whites to stop interfering in our Nation’s governance for decades, but we have oil and other natural resources, so they can’t help themselves
There are a host of other human problems that they have been cries for betterment and improvements and nothing has been done
I’m sure with this your attitude, you have probably downplayed another person’s issues before

Now I’m here telling you to first protect yourself before calling someone else to do so for you and you want to be nonchalant, people that haven’t experienced horror always act so naive

What idiots and yes I do mean idiots, just another Kumbaya moment to make people feel good about themselves and their circumstances instead of confronting reality. And that reality is women should know their surroundings and they should not be in situations that will get them killed like jogging at 4 o'clock in the morning on an abandon street. Sadly this woman and other women who think like her have a mental dissidence that jeopardizes their lives.

The honest truth they should have the right to be unmolested doing whatever they want to do but sadly others who are biologically superior State otherwise

The whole issue reminds me of when bicyclers yell and scream about having the right to ride down busy streets and complain about other vehicle traffic, without the realization the truth is that piece of metal between your legs is not going to do too much to protect you when you are splattered by a truck no matter how much you have the right to be on that road with that truck

That woman should've never been on that street at that time, she should have known better but she took that risk and unfortunately she turned into a cautionary tale for other brave young women who wish to change the world for a better place, which that lesson was there's always going to be a predator with some garden shears hoping to do some trimming.

Title above by CNN...emphasize that women should be able to safely run?! NO S%@T Captain Obvious. Kids should be able to play without fear of kidnapping, people should be able to drive safely without fear of drunk drivers, and this lady should have absolutely never had to worry about what happened to her on this run! There are lots of things we shouldnt have to fear in a perfect utopia, but that utopia does not exist. In the real world, you should always be prepared for the unexpected. If you do not train self defense or have some other way of protecting yourself, you do yourself a disservice. Be prepared, or do not put yourself in a situation of vulnerability...there is ALWAYS someone out there looking for opportunity. There is ALWAYS someone out there looking to harm others. Would you rather go running in the dark or walk city streets at night or be in some other vulnerable situation with the demand that you have the right to do this so leave me alone, or be in a situation where if you do run into one of these people (that will ALWAYS be out there btw) you are prepared? Ill take the latter. Two things need to happen here, 1st people need to accept that evil exists, and you cant just it away. 2nd, with that knowledge that is and always will be a 100% fact, be ready for it. Just a sad reality and a part of the human condition.

Jones Chena how about not putting others down because of their preferences? This article is about solidarity and you seem to back it up, yet you say that only “true athletes” run outdoors. You don’t know the reasons behind someone actions or the struggles that some overcome to even get up and workout in any chosen way, including the paralizing fear of not being safe. If a mother runs 5 milea on a treadmill at 5 am because she knows her chances of coming home are greater, she’s as much a true athlete as someone who runs on pavement. Kindness is the backbone of solidarity.

I used to walk every day, many times on wooded nature trails,
I was always aware of my surroundings. If my gutt told me something wasn't right, which happened many times I wouldn't walk those trails if I was alone.
Another thing carry pepper spray, or if your state allows a conceal carry permit, get some training in the use of a firearm, and take it with you when you run or walk.
Sadly, this is the world we live in today, it's better to be prepared, than become a victim of a crime like this woman has.
Prayers to her family,
So sad her children have to grow up without their momma

I really can’t believe people anymore. They say things that make no sense. This lady was running at 4 am and they want women to be able to safely do that ALONE!! I can guarantee you IT WILL NEVER BE SAFE TO DO THAT!
Can’t anyone understand COMMON SENSE anymore?? It’s TOO LATE . SAFE was a quality of the PAST! Not the present OR the future! It gets LESS SAFE by the day. Anyone who thinks otherwise, needs to see a psychiatrist immediately! You are never safe anywhere, anymore, or anytime. WAKE UP or you will probably become just another statistic!!

We shouldn’t blame the runners for being attacked. But it is always better to be safe. Run where others are running or with someone. Be aware of your surroundings so don’t wear anything that blocks your ability to hear what is going on. Learn some self defense methods in case you have to defend yourself. I believe all women should learn to fight, wrestle, block punches, and other things to protect themselves. And you don’t have to be “nice or gentle” when protecting yourself. Also anything can be used as a weapon. Unfortunately, movies and television don’t show women fighting back very often. Nothing in your house is worth more than your life. If you can use it against the assailant, use it.

Women aren't the only ones that get taken advantage of after dark. Seniors have learned that it's not safe to walk at night. I'm almost 60 and have been harassed and threatened at a nearby park and in the downtown area of my city.

Bad people and the homeless that are on drugs have no problems harassing you after dark and I've also had it happen in the day time.

That's just the way life is in the 21st century. There are too few police and where I live if you not being stabbed or shot then get on line for the police to come and help you. Last time I called there were 130 people ahead of me and I was told an officer could come in 4 or 5 days.

10ºKate McArdle I'm saying that anyone who wants to get in your house is going to get in your house and you're kidding yourself to think a lock on your door will stop them. Until we deal with violent, murderous men, women and children are not safe. They aren't safe at work, at cschool, in the early morning of in the light of day. Trying to make this out to be an issue of her daring to be out in the dark is just a way to let men off the hook and to let women tell themselves that it was some sort of mistake that SHE made that they would never make.
