I will agree that something should have happened sooner in terms of a bully principal being allowed to lead.
One thing our society consistently gets wrong is that all of the burden should be on people with different brains to adjust to how others behave or expect them to behave and not on others. Perhaps had this child experienced kindness and tolerance from this man he wouldn't have been behaving with agitation or aggression.
The situation can certainly not be judged from this little bit of video however looking further into it the family reports a history of antagonistic behavior from the principal.
If that is the case I blame the adults for not advocating for the child and I do not blame this child for attempting to stand up to him.
2ºWhen my now 18 year old, severely autistic non-verbal son was in kindergarten he was abused by his school para. He kept coming home upset and one day he came home and wanted to take a bath and had fingerprint bruises on his back and thumbprint bruises on his chest like someone had grabbed him under his underarms. I called the police. I ranted on Facebook and a couple parents said that they previously saw her grab him by the neck of his shirt collar and yank him backwards and a person I knew who worked elsewhere said she saw them out on a field trip and she was screaming at him. I reported to the school and they started an investigation and she resigned. Imagine my surprise to see that she works there again. I let the special ed director (who wasn’t there at the time) know about what had happened and also let her know that that lady isn’t allowed near my child, not that I think she would agree to work with him again. She was horrible and everyone always said she was the best and he was so lucky… and maybe she was great with other kids, but not my child.
If people can’t handle working with children with disabled (and children in general) they shouldn’t. Kids shouldn’t face stuff like this at school. I know how mad that child’s mom is. Poor kiddo.
3ºKimberlee Mares the lack of expression on the man’s face was concerning to me, but like you said, the woman moved immediately to help the child. The truth is, in situations like that, the goal would be de-escalation and moving the child to safety. Sometimes the student’s needs dictate the way an adult responds, and some children struggle with excitement and big emotions, so we really don’t know why the other two looked the way they did. They were also processing things in real time, and it would be hard to understand what was going on because it was so shocking, so their face’s might not have caught up to their emotions. I am not prepared to truly judge anyone’s actions based on that length of time. Of course if this was something that had been going on before with heads turned, I would think that other jobs should be lost as well.
4ºThe child is autistic and regardless of if he were or not, no adult has the right to put their hands on a child like that. Keep it professional or find yourself another job! But, without a doubt, it makes me wonder if he abuses his wife or girlfriend, and/or his own child/children, because that man has a temper!!! He needs to stay away from children because he's a danger to them. No way in the world would I ever want him to be around any child I know personally and at this point...any child PERIOD!!! He needs to be fired and never be allowed to work inside a school ever again! Unbelievable! Shame on him!! He could have killed him
5ºThis is the type of animals that used to be in charge of our schools back in our days. Especially if you were a Hispanic they would treat you worst then anybody would ever treat a dog . One time my parents came to speak to the principal about a PE coach. So the so called principal told his secretary to tell my parent . ( Tell them if they can’t speak English to get the hell out of my office ) . This was in the Weslaco ISD . The coach would use a 1” X 4” wooden board to spank his students. The lowlife would pick 2 kids every day out of his class which he would spank us for no reason at all . We were 99 % Hispanics in our school and that animal hated Hispanics just like the principal did.
6ºGrant Snodgrass so you would allow someone to do that to your child? Tough guy...he showed a 9 year old a lesson by pushing him so hard he fell down backwards. Way to go! What if he had hit his head someplace and died or got a brain injury?! Oh I was just teaching him a lesson. He is a criminal not a principal as is any other adult just standing around and doing nothing about it. Sad that an adult person would even have this way of thinking. If you can't be creative and find a way to discipline children or teach them other than showing you are a tough guy (which of course it is easy to be when you are doing this to someone much weaker than you) then don't be around kids period.
7º"Cruelty to child by endangering health"-a misdemeanor, meanwhile "cruelty to animals" is a felony.
As for his excuse as to why he pushed him like that, he got in his face yelling threats at him. First of all, that kid couldn't get in his face unless he was standing on a stack of books. Secondly, he was pointing behind the "man" so whatever he was talking about was in that direction. And thirdly, the kid's body language doesn't show anger, he's not breathing heavily, he doesn't appear to be agitated, he's not using his hands to get his point across.
That "Man" is a POS scumbag who should never be allowed to be around kids again, let alone work with or be in charge of kids again.
8ºThe other teachers didn't even respond appropriately. I would have been yelling at that man so bad. The girl went to help the child up, but she did even look surprised or concerned. I would be disgusted and angry
To the people saying "yelling doesn't solve anything"... I did not say that I would scream at the top of my lungs for minutes. I can turn and look at someone while yelling "what the hell is wrong with you" and moving to help the child. There is simply no ignoring that these people react as if they see this behavior on a regular basis, and that is the problem I have with their reactions.
9ºDon’t all students really have special needs? What he did was wrong.
Question:
Why, does the media find the need to always label children and older people? Wasn’t this child a student? Being a student of special needs really doesn’t change anything but it promotes the us and them, in and out, concepts. One group must be better than the other because if you’re in the popular group you belong and if not you don’t belong!
It’s similar to reporters having watched too many older episodes of Sesame Street when they were teaching children to see the differences between things. They should have focused on similarities since this could have resulted in generations developing empathy and compassion for people, places, and things. People would be thinking about their actions because they see the relationship between themselves and others instead of reinforcing the obvious differences.
Everyone should experience some level of belongingness seeking differences only creates outsiders reinforcing exclusion of some at the favor of others.
