Lack of flood insurance in hard-hit Central Florida leaves families struggling after Hurricane Ian | CNN

Inland areas that experienced historic rainfall and catastrophic floodwaters were especially unprepared.

Yes you learn alot along the way. A relatives home was hit by a tornado in 2019 and insurance only paid about 1/8 the value and wouldn't acknowledge the fact it was a total loss due to a huge tree right through it. One adjuster told us the property was too dangerous to access. The next guy wanted to clear out as soon as possible as the smell was getting to him. They wouldn't give anything for inside damage and they ended up selling as is for about 1/4 what it was initially worth and were lucky to get that. FEMA was no help and it will be impossible to recover any losses through them for most. I feel horrible for these people but even it you have insurance it isn't much help.

Jeffery Daniels The majority of south FL geology is porous limestone. Water travels right through it in both directions. Even when there is no rain high tides will flood streets as the water fills the sewer systems and the excess water flows up through the substrate into the streets.. Some low lying cities where this problem is consistent have started raising city streets but this is a temporary stop gap as the ocean water level is continuing to rise and high tides are becoming more severe.. Engineering is part of the solution but the mangrove groves that once served as a protection from these flooding issues are long gone... Getting people away from building directly on the beach front and reestablishing natural barriers would be the best solution. In states like Florida where development by shysters is endemic and the political/economic dynamic feeds off of "growth" this solution might never actually happen.

Insurance companies are for profit like all other businesses. They are not a charity. What business puts themselves in a situation to lose money? None that I am aware of. Insurance is not available in areas where there have been repeated disasters for this reason. People who choose to live in these areas with no insurance have made their own bed. And this will only continue to get worse with global warming. People will need to start making decisions regarding where to live based on this or suffer the consequences with no recourse. Life is all about choices. Some make good choices and some do not.

They all have some type of insurance and it back to having there million dollar houses back again in no time and cars they will come out bigger than before it's always like this ...they just want social media to believe this fake news and feel sorry for them and Florida they all have money and will get paid better than before ....how about focus on people who literally don't or can't afford to buy a house at all and banks make it so hard for them to qualify all these people know the scams and how to scam the system so karma is coming around slowly so how about you telling us the loop holes to help us get a house asap ️

Brad Blake sewer backup costs a lot when it ruins everything in your basement. It's a hassle to have flooring and furniture hauled out, make lists of losses and replacement costs for insurance. It never happened in 30 yrs, then happened two years in a row. That's when we paid $1700 to have a backup prevention valve installed. But back to insurance...it was an extra premium we took out because neighbors had their sewer backup and no insurance because they didn't know. All I'm saying is, you should be able to get a homeowners insurance policy that covers all damages with no strings attached!

Fernando Hernandez if central flordia had some kind of storm retention system, the flooding is kept to a minimum, I read how flordia depends on rivers, residential areas have retainage ditches. Not storm sewers.
As a plumbing engineer, this storm was a horriffic event.
To.me folks all over US been getting away with not having flood insurance, including me, I thought I didn't need it. House was slab on grade, with a 20x20 Ft Culvert box under street, until (Park forest Illinois 1993) we got 9 inches of rain in 6 hours.
Back yard flooded into the house, messed up.everything. it's the cost, why I didn't get it.

Don’t stress about it! Honestly if you relax and just let it happen it will. I did this when I was 39/40 trying for my first, tracking everything and using ovulation tests until we went away for a weekend then realised my 40th was coming nearer and wanting to celebrate, lol and behold no stress and pregnant within 2 months. I was a lot older than you are now, with the strongest beater enough mixture natural herbal tea medication but worrying doesn’t help, just enjoy the fun times and go with it. Good luck xx visit Dr idialu the herb's master

Wesley Pringle Not everyone has the same options you do. And btw, living on a hill doesn’t make you safe from natural disaster Nor does not living in Florida. This idea some of you have that people are at fault because of the state they live in is ridiculous.

I live an hour inland (not in Florida) A tree fell on my house in a hurricane. How far should we move? There was flooding inland from this storm.

You also have to remember that places flood in a hurricane that ONLY flood from a hurricane with a strong storm surge.

Becky Faye Henderson Wray really so all other states leaders are responsible for disasters? Since the president is president of the United States then he should be responsible also. You really don't even know what you're talking about with migrants. Florida did not spend even close to a million to fly migrants to Martha vineyard. For your ignorant thoughts 12 million was voted upon and set aside for migrants coming though southern border. If your ignorance hasn't noticed there has been 4 million that have crossed the border. Most of them are illegal also. They have not claimed asylum because they don't have to. Do a little research instead of listening to the lies. It's all on government websites for your ignorant reading pleasure. What a moron you are. Hope your livelihood is destroyed. You worthless inconsiderate piece of crap

10ºThats what happens when you vote for radical blowhard right wing leaders who had opportunity to do something about insurance housing crisis in January instead he picked a fight with Disney then wasted $12 million in Florida taxpayer dollars to illegally transport LEGAL IMMIGRANTS from Texas to Florida to Martha's Vineyard.
That $12 million would come in handy right now so would those LEGAL immigrants they would work clean up.
Instead Governor DeSantis took millions from insurance companies and did nothing he passed a BS bill that did zero.
Now hes begged for federal dollars to the tube of $89 BILLION to cover the BS
