Vanderbilt Transgender Health Clinic suspends gender-affirming surgery for minors | CNN

The move came amid pressure from Tennessee’s Republican leaders who sent a letter to the hospital last week.

No matter where you fall on this debate, no matter how educated you think you are on the topic, there is one universal fact that governs all of these stories...

Once a transition from one's natural state is made, there is no taking it back. You can transition again, perhaps, but there is no way to undo a transition. You will forever be "modified" and having to deal with the fallout.

That being the case, why in the world would ANY parent make such a permanent, unchangeable, life-complicating decision for a child that will change their mind a million times ABOUT EVERYTHING before they reach adulthood???

Amanda Novak medical professionals don't make great decisions on a lot of cases. It's well known and has been that children's brains are not developed enough to manage rational thought processes. You get some quack doctors to say it's OK doesn't mean it is. Not going to listen to science denier bs either. Medical doctors have save my life on two occasions and I recognize that science I a wonderful thing on so many levels but it doesn't mean they are 100% right 100% of the time and fringe ideas you seem to want to support have very little foothold compared to the decades of actual research on children and their brains.
You keep your touchy feeling everyone should decide, it's their bodies bs until you can tell me why we, as a country, won't send kids to war, drink, get a tattoo ect until 18, yet here you are. Sometimes you need to put your feelings aside for the sake of humanity, not your personal sick agenda. Obviously the place in Tennessee now want to review its process and we will see the outcome. Protest all you want and the ones who are against it can protest all they want too.

I support anyone who believes they’re the wrong gender and wants to be changed but I don’t support doing it when they’re minors. We all know how muddled up teenagers are regarding their identities. And while many of these young people may truly be transgender, some may not. They should least achieve the age of 18 before making such a huge, life altering decision. Right now some people might think it’s cool to be transgender and you never know if someone is going to do it because of that reason. I know I will get attacked for my view but again it’s not because I don’t support the right of transgender people to choose their gender, I do, but I just don’t want mistakes made on something so major.

They are still providing gender affirming care. What this basically means is that they're temporarily halting mastectomies on teenagers age 16 to 18, since that is all they were doing. The surgeries were performed on average of 5 times per year, with parental consent. No genital surgeries or hysterectomies were being performed under age 18. I wonder if they're also halting the boob jobs performed on teenage girls under 18, which happen at a much higher rate. Oh wait, I forgot. People only get mad when *trans* teens receive care, not when *cisgender* teens do. The same goes for puberty blockers. My bad.

Intisar Patrick You are silly. Pausing Gender affirming surgery for minors is oppressing fundamental rights? These kids cannot even vote yet. They cannot drink legally. In many cases that cannot travel without being accompanied by a parent or guardian. They are not old enough or mature enough to make those types of decisions. And having someone else make the decision for them is ridiculous. You should read the testimonies of those, who as minors, had “gender affirming” surgery, and as they grew older realized the mistakes they make because of immature reasoning. Permitting this type of surgery to kids who most think it is no more severe than changing a hair style is ridiculous. Creating more dysfunction among the population is an asinine idea.

Amanda Novak what part do you not understand? Teens don't know what they want in a majority of cases. Your desire to allow that makes me question your mental capacity. Read my comment again. This is your play and you can't really justify child abuse yet you want to play some gotcha game. Tell me how it's supposed to be and I'll I'll give you an opposing view, it won't include using and mutilating children for an agenda. When they are old enough to be called adults then they can make their own decisions and take responsibility for it. Again, what part do you not understand?

Cindy Baum Gentry Well if you’re black brown blue or purple the Democrats just want your vote and still let you live in poverty so there you go. non-whites have been voting Democrat for the last 70 years the Democrats fed him nothing but lies and false promises and you know what after 70 years the ones that keep voting Democrat they’re still poor! When are you people going to realize that the Democrats have been bamboozling you for the last 70 years? They have hurt minority communities with welfare subsidize housing and free stuff to the point where they have no applicable skills to where they have to depend on the government because they are not educated enough to hold a job and they want to blame it on white Republicans? If you haven’t figured it out by now there’s no hope for you

María Laura Pozo I wholeheartedly agree with you, but I think the question has to be asked, what right does the government have to interfere with a parent and a physician made decision to get an elective surgery? This feels right because children need to be protected, but I don’t think it’s the government’s job to step in this instance despite my feelings on the matter. At the end of the day, that parent, that physician, and child will have to bear the consequences of that decision to have that surgery so young, bad or good. It isn’t the government job to make life altering decisions for competent parents taking the recommendations of trained physicians while listening and seeing the struggles of their child.

First, I’m neither a democrat or republican. Just speaking from what I believe and experienced in my life-time. This is a tough issue. There was a lot of things I experienced as a child that led me down different paths that I was not old enough nor had been taught about related to sexual orientation or now gender topics we have today. I do believe minors should not take meds or have any type of surgeries until they are at least 18. Growing up in this generation is tough enough with all the bullying and all the peer pressure to act or be a certain way! Make decisions as you are older and mature enough to truly understand. Education is the key in a non bias setting and without religion.

10ºGood!! Children are to young to make a life altering decision like that. Parents should be telling their children that think they are in the wrong body let's wait til you get older and gone through puberty before you make that type of life altering decision that you might regret later. Doctor should be doing the same thing telling them to wait til they are older and gone through puberty before making a life altering decision that you might regret later. These groomers that are forcing this stuff to be taught in school and drag queens wanting to go to libraries and schools and wanting put in kids shows need to be stopped and let kids be kids. This stuff is for adults only not for kids.
