Pop art was a commentary on previous movements. It challenged fine art by including images like current news and advertising. Warhol challenged the concept of being an “artist” so it has to be understood within that context. It was a representation of time and events which had not been done previously and a commentary on society. He ushered in a movement. That’s why his work is so admired. His Factory in NYC was a collaboration of different artists where he was a a “director” of social commentary and the superficial times in American culture. As such he launched an important movement. Artists like Koons were heavily influenced. Warhol worked into his art the idea of consumerism as a reflection of society and as commentary. As such, his work brought into a new movement. That’s why his work is so coveted. It’s hard to understand, but if you delve into art history and different movements, he was a pioneer and brought art to the masses.
