While many of us are spending today breaking bread with our given and chosen families, we cannot forget that for many, specifically Indigenous Americans, Thanksgiving can be a day of mourning and protest. Thanksgiving commemorates the arrival of settlers in North America and is a reminder of the centuries of oppression and genocide that followed. Native perspectives are critical when discussing the history of the "First Thanksgiving" and the pain and trauma that followed. The reality: Interactions with Europeans & Americans brought accelerated and devastating changes to American Indian cultures. Changes that are still felt today. Growing up, my family has always taken time to reflect on this & remember history. As we gather with one another, I’d encourage each of us to take some time, reflect on the history of this holiday make sure we never forget. It’s the only way we can do better for our future. #Thanksgiving #turkeyday #turkey
