It's quite simple. 1. Adults have the inalienable right to take any drugs or foods that they want. 2. Prohibition creates crime. The obvious example is Portugal, which during strict Prohibition had the highest crime and overdose rates in Europe. Since decriminalization in 2001, Portugal has become one of the safest places in Europe and has few overdose deaths.

During alcohol prohibition, the national homicide rate in the United States doubled, and after repeal the rate gradually declined by half. The barbarism of the drug war is apparent in the homicide rates of the US and Mexico, and in the mass incarceration for drug crimes in the former.

People incarcerated for consensual drug crimes should be treated as political prisoners.
