Thirteen bison killed in traffic accident near Yellowstone Park

Multiple bison died near the western entrance of Yellowstone National Park in Montana after being struck by a semi-truck, police say.

The highway section where the bison were hit is straight, as an arrow. It’s mostly flat with a few “hills”. The only real dip is going over the Madison River. It was after sunset. There are SO MANY signs saying bison/wildlife may be on the road. The trees have been removed all along this stretch of road for at least 20 yards, so it’s not hard to see wildlife on the side of the road. They can’t “pop out” of the woods like other places. After dark, the semi speed limit is clearly marked for cars AND semis, and both are required to slow down after dark. If other cars were involved, my bet is they’re from out of state. PLUS, you’re driving (basically) through Yellowstone National Park on this road. One must assume there are large animals around. That trucker should have understood where they were and the road conditions. My point, there is ZERO excuse for this accident. So sad.

Kerry Proulx So is a semi truck going around curves that can't stop right away. Bison tend to wander on and around paved roads. Even CNN admitted this. I've seen them do this by Hot Springs, SD. This happened on a straight road. And they are also known to charge vehicles. If you can make a stop far enough away and wait for them to cross or get out of the way, you're better for it. If not, I hope you're in something as big as a semi truck. And never ever get out of the vehicle. Never. It's hard for a semi truck to turn around on a road that doesn't give them room to do so.
