The Speaker is a ‘ceremonial/procedural’ position. Yes, it can be used to bring together House members — but, it can’t change the make-up of the House.
The ‘Power’ of the Speaker position is what the House gives it, correct?
It would be to Rep’s advantage to have a Speaker from the Minority Party — it would show that they are willing to ‘do the work’ of Bipartisanship to pass their initiatives/bills. Which will help them in 2024.
What better bragging rights than, “We passed XYZ for the American People by working across the aisle with a Minority Senate & Dem Speaker”.
Yes, I know this is oversimplified— but you get the idea. Not all Reps actually support either McCarthy or (extremist puppet) — pretty sure they can see the tide turning towards investments in infrastructure & putting Americans first — back to work/school/community engagement/inclusion/decency/collaboration . . .
3ºSorry, but this lunatic Republican named Good just claimed the USA as the greatest country in the world, during his nomination speech for a new speaker. Really? Your country has been going down the tubes since Trump was elected head of the Republicans. You are a disgrace to the West. You spit on your Allies and sided with Putin more than once. You broke the agreement the West had brokered with Iran when they were abiding by it and now look what they’re doing…selling weapons to Russia to use against Ukraine. You defunded South American countries and caused the mass migration of migrants, and now you want to defund Ukraine and other countries that need help. Now look at what you have become…a laughing stock to the world.
4ºWatching all of this play out is just crazy! I heard today by Republicans, on the House floor podium and several news media interviews, it’s Democrats fault for not voting with them to end this, the news media is playing  Republicans against each other and no Democrat will ever be the Speaker as long as Republicans are in the majority.
Republicans have had two years to resolve any issues and who is the best candidate for House Speaker.
Republican’s that are voting against McCarthy are raise monies from this sh*t show. McCarthy is being extorted by his own people while using taxpayers money. I’m certain that Democrat’s do the same thing. But if you claim that you don’t want to raise the ceiling debt and reduce the budget then don’t use taxpayers money to pay the extortioners.

Ever since the party adopted nixon's "southern strategy " in the 1960s in opposition to the burgeoning Civil rights movement of the time they have since become the party of racism and bigotry. It has only grown worse with the advent of right-wing conspiracy theories being spread online along with the rise of Trump.
The party is still scared to death of Trump but they seem to forget that Trump only holds such power as long as the party keeps giving it to him.
6ºCharles Hawkins, in theory, this has some merit but in a functioning political system, it's impossible. Once you get past the local level city councilman and get to representatives and senators, it would become impossible. Does that mean there would be a thousand different senators, each representing the thoughts of a handful of voters?
Another key point is that a society has to be run based upon a confluence of ideas, not just the thoughts of one person who happens to have what they believe are good ideas. I feel a middle ground of more political parties which can provide a nuanced approach to multiple issues is much better than the current duopoly which really only works for a minority few.
7ºStephane Djomo Ntaya sorry, but no, sen. mccain did not hold up the house that day. rather, he left his sickbed and went to the house in order to cast his vote to save obamacare. he didn't do this for some weird reason, he did it because he truly believed that americans needed affordable health care and because he knew that donald trump was lying when he said that he had a beautiful health care plan that would replace obamacare once obamacare had been defeated. but for sen. mccain's courage that day, thousands and thousands of americans would have lost the healthcare coverage they'd gained under obamacare. needless to say, trump never did produce the beautiful plan he'd promised the american people on so many occasions.
