1ºJeramy Newport first, that vote would be a vote to change the rules, or they wouldn't have to vote. Second at what point have they ever made this happen? 1923 they still had to get a majority vote, 1856 also they had to get a majority vote. In both situations more time lapsed before a speaker was elected, 1856 also went to vote significantly more time then this one.
In short I doubt you have any proof to back that statement up, even double checking I can find zero information stating a historically they have voted to elect a house speaker in any other way.
2ºReally, there is no incentive for the Captain Crazypants wing of the GOP to end its hostage situation. They will never have more power than they have at this moment, and McCarthy's earlier capitulations have only emboldened them to hold out until they get absolutely everything they want.
Reasonable Republicans could negotiate with the Democrats to form a compromise coalition government. But while that would enable our government to function, Republican voters have made it clear that treating Democrats as anything but the enemy is a sure way to get primaried out of office in the next election, to be replaced by another member of the clown car.
The trumpers now own the Republican Party. The only way the GOP will survive in any form is to jettison the extremists, even if it means going back to an arrangement where both sides work for the common good. Then again, the common good has never been a priority for Republicans. This circus performance could go on for weeks.
3ºJeramy Newport I did finally find the details on those, it doesn't seem like something you will see happen today. Just the simple structure of the house with parties then vs now, democrats will vote for it because they would be more likely to win, Republicans will not because they might as well vote for the Democrat's nominee vs 1856 that saw multiple parties in the house. Best case scenario would be party line split, same outcome.
Added even with it being used in the past, what was it the democrat's said about the senate with the supreme court nominations? Something about "no recent historical precedent", seems this would fall under their own criticism of the operation of the legislative branch and precedent.
What is happening now in the house is the same that the squad threatened to do and should have done, they just didn't have the principles to press aginst the party.
Btw if they have to vote to allow it, it still falls under changing the rules.

5ºAs someone that's voted democrat but currently a republican, I love to see it. Finally, pushing back on the establishment at any and all expense. We the people are sick of electing politicians without term limits that cave to lobbyists, sellout the special interests and make decisions that aren't in the best interests of their constituents to enrich themselves. While I can appreciate that dems stick together, they are robots, a bunch of puppets that have run this country straight into the ground over the last 2+ years (numbers don't like.....facts are facts) and will continue to do so with the help of these tone deaf establishment republicans. 7ºMcCarthy is the only one seeking the seat, the bulk of Republicans want him as Speaker, a few disgraced office holders have had concessions extended only for them lead by Gaetz to walk away attempting to humiliate Kevin instead humiliating themselves in their malfeasance of duty. These kindergarteners should be recalled then once the show gets on the road censured. Many posts I have seen have no understanding of how government works or what is actually happening. I get posts by them sadly. The bulk of people are getting it, do understand, and are getting furious with these dysfunctional micreatants who do not belong in office. This is serious business for the world to see. These MAGA burn it all down clowns do not belong in office. Those who don't grasp what this is vote sadly and this is what they get and their ignorance hurts us all.
