This type of story gets the attention, but I'm sure the number of elderly victims that get "scammed" by their own family is far greater.
I know it's not their responsibilty, but banks should have a direct line to the elder abuse hotline and be trained in what to look for. If an elderly person after years of no problems suddenly starts bouncing their utility payments, call the hotline. When a house that's been paid off for years is put up for a loan and then gets mortgaged again, call the hotline. New large withdrawals for cash, call the hotline.

One thing, among a number of others, is pretty obvious. That a number of folks are cast aspersion onto the senior citizen for his culpability. For one, if he has dementia or beginning Alzheimer's, that would be a reason he was getting taken for a ride by that con. Another is that when you've been married for a very long time, and then are suddenly deprived of that all consuming companionship, you are not exactly going to do well if someone isn't there to help you all the time. Why do you think that we have most of these human vultures targeting the elderly as they do?

Kim Hays You're right- it's planned manipulation and greed. I went through that with my dad after my mom died- he was lonely. He was 72 and met this woman, 55, who ripped him off his military pension, social security, and saving, took control of his bank account, leaving him broke- borrowing from us.

He moved her into his house, and she turned him against his daughters and wouldn't allow us to talk to him or see him. We did have social services checks ups and she didn't allow them in the house to evaluate him. We could not get him away from her. We called social services elder adult abuse and police- they told us we couldn't do anything because he moved her into his house, and we didn't have power of attorney.

He was a healthy-minded man, so we didn't think to get a POA. Finally, one day he got really sick and developed dementia; she dropped him off at the hospital like a dog and disappeared for weeks. It was the doctors that called my sister; he was in the hospital, and it was when we rescued him and got POA. We got control of his bank accounts and moved him in with my sister, and he passed away Dec. 2021.

This is a psychopathic individual. Practically all con artists are antisocial by nature. They lack remorse for their victims and they lack regard for consequences because they think they're too intelligent to be caught at some point. Manipulation, deceit, lies. This is how they operate and they do it without a shred of morality or compassion. Put her away for 30 years I'd say.

As for the victim, I don't get why he felt compelled to give a stranger on the internet like this all his money. I know he was desperate for companionship, but this is insane. This takes simping to another level. I'm not sure what he saw in her to begin with but I guess everyone has their perspective.

DIIR Welcomes UN Probes into China's Colonial Boarding Schools in Tibet

January 12, 2023

Dharamsala: The Department of Information and International Relations (DIIR) of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) welcomes the UN human rights experts' communication raising serious concern over the Chinese government's colonial-style residential schools and its assimilationist impact on Tibetan cultural and national identity.

Four UN Special Rapporteurs-with mandates on Minority Issues, Fernand de Varennes; Cultural Rights, Alexandra Xanthaki; the Right to Education, Farida Shaheed; and Freedom of Religion or Belief, Nazila Ghanea-voiced their concerns about China's assimilationist policies threatening the existence of Tibet's language, culture, and religion. These experts have particularly raised serious concerns over China's vast network of colonial boarding schools in Tibet while also asking several questions to China about its "policy of acculturation and assimilation of the Tibetan culture [-], through a series of oppressive actions against Tibetan educational, religious and linguistic institutions."

What on earth is an 87 year old man doing on tinder or any dating site? He should have concentrated on himself living the best of life. Most likely his wife and soulmate died and he did this through loneliness. So sad. She needs to spend the rest of her life in jail and liquidate all the assets she bought with his money and return it to him.He should have been tuned into dish network ID 192 to see how lucky he was. She could have set him up to lose his life. He needs to be in a nursing home where they can keep an eye on him or if he must stay at home and get some knitting wool and a pet to keep his company if he is lonely

A lot tiles the older person has dementure. There was an incident in the senior housing I use to live in. There a guy that this redheaded slop was taking advance of. She was young , always drunk. Asked me and others for dugs and money. Really. I don't do drugs and if I did I wouldn't have given her any. She called him her boy friend. We complained to housing. She was staying there. They finally posted a police notice with her picture on the door. Didn't stop the goings on. In and out several times a day. No one on our area wanted to be near her. She was so dirty. Last I heard from store owner she still around. Throwing up outside the stores. I did her in the worst shape I have seen her awhile ago.b I don't know if housing finally managed to get rid of her. I know she needed help . They needed to get her help and they needed to put him somewhere where he would be cared for.

Carla Merriam agree. My *Uncle Scumbag* totally stole my grandmother's house from under her early in her dementia. He lived with her but didn't actually take care of her. Taking loans out on her house that my grandfather had left her with paid off many years ago when he passed so she'd always have their home. My Uncle got her to change it so his name was on the deed, had her change her will to only include him and left out my Aunt and my dad. My grandmother ended up in a nursing home and my Uncle never went to see her there, didn't go to any of her services when she passed, hasn't reached out to any of his siblings and has made it so his children will get my grandmother's house when he passes. I can't even imagine burning your own mother like that and just cutting your whole family out and being able to live with yourself. It's disgusting.

10ºMelanie Kay Mink who people was surviours of the holocaust ? Why are they always treating the holocaust survivors and slave decent different when they both went through atrocities as a people , you say any comment about them you are attacked and when you speak on slavery and the inhumane treatment of the people from the slave trade no representation or protection , in my original comment I only was highlighting the article could have been about the elderly man who got swindled out of what ever money he did and how it showed some sort of special privilege of those particular people by putting the holocaust survivor in it , when that is already a sensitive and heated topic .
