National Archives considering asking past presidents and vice presidents to look again for classified materials

The National Archives is looking into sending letters to all living former presidents and vice presidents, asking them go through their records to ensure there are no classified materials.

I feel like this has gone to far. All of this to keep from charging Trump with for not reporting he was still dealing with other countries through his organizations, by promising them or selling information to them, and not turning over the organization or his business fully over Don jr. or Eric Trump like he stated he would. Nobody has the guys to just tell Trump he was wrong. Trump hire these attorneys to play with faith by bringing up unnecessary $#@&! to try and buy time in keep these allegations tie up in court with law suits. I am still puzzle how did they no Biden had documents in his house and place of business...and why is the DOJ or the FBI bothering with a sitting president. When Trump was President nobody bothered him and he was untouchable. Now the GOP allowing Trump to run again to steal and collect more of the people money for his gain.

Biden should no longer be "ask". The DOJ should be conducting their own search of other Biden homes, offices and storage facilities. Joe has over 1,800 boxes of government doccuments stored unsecured at a Deleware University from his Senate days that should be searched.

Seems the Biden camp didn't even notify the DOJ that they were searching Bidens one home, after the Penn-Biden center stash was found, until after the first classified docs were found....by Biden paid people with no clearance to look at or handle classified doccuments.

Bottom line is Joe still took classified material that he was not authorized to take, had it moved more than once, used it away from its secure site, stored in insecurely, then lost, forgot about it.

Chris Heward Here is something to educate yourself regarding declassify documents.

"One thing the president cannot do, though, is declassify information “by thinking about it” — i.e., without communicating that decision to anyone else. This conclusion follows not from any particular legal requirements but rather from the very essence of what it means to classify or declassify information. As noted above, these are two-step processes: first, an official determines whether the information requires protection, and second, the information is flagged to ensure that the protections are applied or removed. If an official claims to have classified or declassified information after taking the first step but not the second, it’s like a customer saying she ordered food at a restaurant when she has decided what she wants to eat but hasn’t told the waiter."

Ivan Verez you mean mishandling. Nobody was asked about stealing. Stealing requires intent to permanently deprive the owner of property, and unlike Trump, President Biden voluntarily turned over documents when discovered.

The majority of Americans want Trump investigated too.

I agree with the majority on both counts. Not you or the Republican House committee though. You all want to pretend the 200 documents at Mara Lago were somehow President Trump's. Even Trump's own lawyer could not explain how those documents became Trump's.

The appeals court opinion included an explanation of what the classification markers signal, citing an executive order that establishes that classified documents are "owned by, produced by or for, or ... under the control of the United States Government."

This is the real problem! The national archives should know where every single document is, At ALL TIMES! It appears government members can request and receive these classified documents and that is your process. But for the national archives asking for people to look for any that they may still have, is a joke! The archives should know who got what and when and certainly have made sure they got them back, if the person was leaving office. They are classified and or top secret documents that you have no idea of what is missing or not returned, is criminal to say the least!

Nora Gross classifications are a matter of policy not law. When something is marked top secret for example it tells you who can view the document and how it’s supposed to be stored. When say the president declassifies something all that really means is that it can be handled outside established procedures. Still the people that can see it would have to be vetted and have clearance unless it’s decided to make the information public. Everyone else is going to still handle the information according to procedures. The president and most often by executive order the VP can declassify documents and do not have to follow the established policy and procedures in handling this information. The do have to follow the law which protects all sensitive information related to national security regardless of classification status. So if the information was not related to national security it is relevant if a crime was committed.

Jesse Williams someone reported one of the documents Pence had was for one of the visits that he had traveled to during his time as VP. I don’t know how accurate that report is but his full itinerary and security protocols of that visit would have been classified at the time. I don’t know if the document would contain any relevant information now except it could show Secret Service tactics for security measures. But any major government I’m sure are already aware of Secret Service capabilities. I’m just highlighting the fact that not all classified documents contain super secret information even those marked top secret. They may be relevant at the time but after a visiting event it’s not hard to imagine politicians just throwing it in their personal safe at home and forgetting about it.

Ivan Verez every single President was asked for documents and turned them all over. Again, it is in the article. GWB turned over everything, including his personal documents, and the personal items were later returned to him.

Donald Trump spent more than a year withholding documents. His lawyers turned over 15 boxes in January of 2022. Four months later (16 months after he left office) a letter from his own lawyers stated they believed he had even more. More documents were turned over two months after that, but witnesses came forward to report he has many more boxes of classified documents. That is when the Justice Department got a warrant from a judge.

I have had a high security clearance. Very high. We were read the riot act about handling classified documents. There can be no justification - none whatsoever - for taking a classified document out of a secure area! I know in my case we were told that if we goofed up with classified documents and classified information, we wouldn't have to worry about being prosecuted. We picked up on the meaning. The men who did this - ALL of them - Trump, Pence, Biden - need to be prosecuted to the extent of the law. These documents are classified for good reasons and if somebody is irresponsible with them - like Biden - they should be immediately removed from office. Biden doesn't get a pass because he is leftist, or because he has Alzheimer. This is a serious matter and should be dealt with. He was and is unfit for office as evidenced by his handling of classified information. So was Trump. Removing a sitting president from office for violating the laws concerning classified information would send a clear message to all future presidents not to mis-handle classified information.

10ºMike Phillips Do YOU even read the news??? Trump never “Stole” documents like Biden did! Trump had documents that he personally declassified, and that were declared in his possession the day he left the White House with them. At that time that they were declared they became under the protection of the USA Secret Service the national archives gave instructions on how to store them under lock and key with the Secret Service and the Trump lawyers were always in communication with the national archives negotiating how they would be handled and if they needed to be returned.
THIS IS ALL PUBLICLY DOCUMENT AND REPORTED, HOW ARE YOU POSSIBLY COMFUSED??
Joe Biden never had the authority to declassify documents like a president does. Joe Biden stole documents from other people’s presidency’s.
