The Value of Cities
Throughout history, societies without cities don't last long on their own. Instead they are absorbed into or conquered by countries that progressed beyond just raising food. In other words countries with cities and other urban areas are a sign of progress and strength.

Let's look at North America for example. The native populations on the North American continent had no major population centers, no organized division of labor beyond the tribal level, and little interest in technological development. Then came the Europeans with their technological and societal advancements that only come from areas that have many cities. The Europeans that came to North America rapidly replaced the native populations.

This is why the current efforts to denigrate cities and even redraw state lines to consolidate rural areas is incredibly short sighted.

I suggest that those advocating this rural consolidation think what life in these rural areas would be like without the advantages they enjoy because our country has a long history of vibrant cities.
