2ºSo terribly sad. Prayers for all involved. I remember as a teen driver in Southern California, having my Mom constantly reaffirming the importance of diligence and defensive driving. She would say, "I know you would never forgive yourself for hurting your little sister or anyone else." I used to also drive an elementary age child from another family. Raising my own kids in California as emerging drivers in the late 90's, I was pleased by the law changes, limiting who can be a passenger with a driver under age 18. Not always convenient, but so much more sensible. Again, prayers, and condolences to the families.
3ºThere is more to this story and it has nothing to do with the Mall. The mall closes at 9:30 and this happened at 12:20am. Nobody knew the kids and car were missing. Kid in trunk. Family cannot justify this by any means and should be charged with 5 counts of death and endangering the welfare of a child. If the kids were fleeing for their lives and the 16 year old was their savior and if they were fleeing only to die a tragic painful death, it’s too much to bear. Did the family call the cops when the kids were missing after midnight?
4ºElicia Murphy in CT you can get your learners permit at 16. You are only allowed to drive with a parent until you get your actual license about 4-6 months after you get your learners permit and pass the driving test. Then you can drive alone or with a parent but no siblings or friends. After you have your license for 6 months, you can drive siblings. After you have your license for a year, then you can drive friends. My 17 year old still won’t be able to drive friends until she’s 17 1/2. And there is a curfew for 16 and 17 year old drivers in CT - not allowed to drive between 11pm- 5am, with just a few exceptions (ie work). Clearly laws were being broken here but I am heartbroken for this family.
