One of the most exciting ball games I've seen in a few years. As good as the Japanese squad is I don't think they would have prevailed if Scherzer, Verlander, Kershaw and some of the other top flight U.S pitchers had opted to compete. They sat out - probably at the request of their team management to eliminate the possibility of injury in an exhibition game when they are being paid $30 million or so to pitch in games that have more significance. I did root for the Japanese team and I was glad they won, but their victory was diminished by the fact that the U.S fielded a team with less than their best on the bump. I was surprised that the U.S announcers weren't falling back on that as an excuse - too obvious perhaps?

James Zimmer euro soccer (football ) has a cup within each country (eg FA Cup, England, etc) AND the Champions league for multi country league team competitions, but they don’t call it the “World” champions league since it’s just euro teams. Just seems presumptuous for MLB to call theirs the World Series when it’s just US/some Canadian teams. Now, I’m sure if there was an actual World Series with teams like from the MLB that competed against similar teams from around the entire world, I’m sure an MLB team would still win most of the time. But it would be a cool competition. And maybe inspire players not to go overseas to play on a team as often.
