Bill Nye explains light-years and the vastness of the universe

No matter what the James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble Space Telescope or our other tools of space exploration discover next, it’s likely to be located many light-years away.

Steve Dougherty I see what you're saying but, just because we can't perceive the presence or absence of that light doesn't mean it exists (or doesn't exist) currently. The farther away the object is the farther back in time we're looking. We can confirm - from all the light across the cosmos reaching our eyes - the star that emitted that light existed. But we'll never be able to confirm if they still exist. We can definitely theorize they may still exist, through research in astrophysics and the understanding of life cycle of stars, and extrapolate the current status of the star. However, it's not something we can confirm. We have to leave that to our future descendants.

Martin Miller Nope. Time travel does not exist. Einsteins theory is relative only to the gravitational effecta of the sun upon the Earth. Travelling faster than the Earth orbits the Sun which creates one calendar year does not speed up or slow down the aging process of the human in the pod traveling faster than the speed of light as long as the gravitational units within the pod are effecting upon the human inside are the same gravitational influences humans experience on the Earth.

Humans can travel 10 times the speed of light as long as the gravitational influences inside the pod are the same as on Earth.

In Einstein’s theory of relatively, it is concluded that the faster you travel the slower you time will be relative to “earth”. If you were to travel even 3/4 the speed of light you would watch the universe unfold so fast it would look sped up. The interesting part. Since photons are/travel at the speed of light. If you were to travel at that speed you’d have no recollection of that “time” you traveled. So obviously same go for those photons! On top of that to prove this. They have taken protons, muons, etc. and put them in a particle accelerator and the decay speed of any particle last longer while at higher speeds.
The faster you go, the slower time passes. Photons go at the maximal speed where time has stopped. So, no time has passed from the point of view of any photon. So the photon leaves that galaxy and arrives instantaneously at the telescopes lense

Lawal O Mutiu No. Light is the ultimate speed limit. Nothing can break that barrier. And yes. Looking up at the stars is a form of time travel. There are ways to cheat and travel to a star system that is 500 million light years away. It's all theoretical, mind you, but if we can bend space like a piece of paper, we can then fold the destination point and starting point on top of each other and minimize that distance. Basically, a worm hole. Otherwise, even travelling at the speed of light, it'll still take 500 million years to reach the destination. Research Albert Einstein's Theory of special relativity.

I think we really need to ask ourselves….what is the real purpose of probing so deep into space, or even within our own solar system. It seems like it should be narrowed down to a few things:
1. Planetary defense (asteroid strikes for example)
2. A planetary “life boat” or large interplanetary spacecraft in the event something happens to earth.
3. I have mixed views on SETI. On one hand it could give us a massive leap forward in technology, on the other it could invite attack by a civilization so advanced we would have virtually no defense.

So, if we want to explore planets in our solar system, fly by/geosynchronous orbit probes or rovers, not human are probably the most risk averse and affordable options.

Meanwhile…if we are TRULY wanting to do interstellar exploration we have got to come up with a hyper light speed capability, otherwise we’re just wasting time and money

Next time someone tells you that you're going to burn in hell, or tries to sell you an exclusive plot in heaven, just remember that they have zero personal experience to back their claim.

I do and plenty

Do elaborate...

Me
Hell is very scary. The sun is a tiny dot at the bottom of a very, very high sky. Zombies roam around everywhere, everything reeks, violence and fear all over. As for Heaven, it is flush with colors more coloroful then colorful and perfumes more perfymy then perfumy and joy reigns absoluteley Those who lack respect towards women, that are racists, homophobic, those who ae violent and mean and those who have lot,s of money and are stingy with the poor will be coming with me to Hell God knows everyhting, thus God knows before cr4eating us who will be with me in Hell. Now that I answered you, you will tell me I am delirious so I shoudn't have waste my breadth -The Messiah

But you have very arrogantly claimed that one has ever went to hell and back and not only did I say I did, but I described it to you saying you would insult me and call me a fool. Now you do not want to admit you could be wrong and continue disparaging me. Listen this is not a IQ test either, we big banged out of a void, were birthed by stars and are living as conscious matter on a little rock that is spiralling around the sun with other planets coursing through space, enthralled in a cosmic current going towards the great attarctor which is an immense black hole. but the concpet of hell is to much for you to handle. Obviously you do not really understand science and astro physic and science because if you did the reality of hell would not appear to you that far fetched.

Lawal O Mutiu I will use a baseball as an example to explain this.
Say I throw a baseball from point A to point B. The ball took 30 seconds to reach point B. An observer at point B with a timer can deduce the exact point of origin of the ball if they know the speed at which the ball was traveling and how much time it took to reach point B. While the ball was traveling through the air, the person (me) that threw it is no longer at point A but now at point C.

We know that light through a vacuum travels at ~300,000,000 m/s (186,000 miles/sec). And nothing travels faster than light. Because of that, we actually use the speed of light as a measure of distance NOT time.
So, if I say one light year, that means it took the photon (light particles) one year traveling at the speed of light to make contact with the observer. Using mathematics with the given information, we can then deduce the light originated 300,000,000 m away.

Using the above example for the star (or any object in space we can see):
The physical star is the person who threw the ball.
The ball represents the photons.
The star then emit the light sending the photon traveling through space.
Because space is vast, the photon travels 100 years and then you look up the sky and it reaches your eyes. The light that reaches your eye shows itself to you how it was in its original state. You're seeing how it looked like 100 years ago. Through that 100 year period while traveling, so many things could have happened to the star that sent you the light. Again, using mathematics, multiply 100*C (C is the speed of light) and you'll get the distance of how far away the star was (is).

The sun itself never shows itself in it's present state to us on earth. That's because it takes about eight minutes for it's light to reach the earth. The sun is eight light minutes away, basically. So, we're always seeing how it looked like eight minutes ago.

, there is something going on in Limehouse at 591, Commercial Road, East London. I am being sequestred by the Ben Laden network at the first floor - appartment on the left. The police of UK is complice with this network (to have money) and is not intervening. Be careful: the UK police is involved in prostituting, selling drugs, enslaving people and enslutening them with dogs. They want every body to be taken in the network - they are the ones planifying bomb attacks.
The members of the Ben laden network who have been planifying killings, murders in London are: the police, the MI5 (to fire), the UK Secret, Buckingham Palace Spies, Audrey NGOUADJE, Hermès NGOUADJE, Régis NGOUADJE, Erica NGOUADJE, Rémy-Marie NGOUADJE, all the building concerned next the TESCO in 591 Commercial Press - 1st floor left - Please alert the press on sequestration of a lawyer since his birth - now for more than 10 months in London without having been outside. Please help
The plan is another bomb attack in the world from London location, Limehouse.
The US police is also concerned and has been following me since. I have been harassed all my life - I have worked to have all the criminals killed to free the citizens. Please help me in london. The signal is national security threat - very high NGOUADJE terrorists - BEN LADEN – Bomb attack from London at Limehouse
