I mean this isn't new information, it's just now being acknowledged. I work in the medical field, at a very prominent hospital. Unfortunately, last year I was hospitalized for almost 2 months with various stints back in the hospital after being initially discharged. The entire time, despite having access to fmla/ada and all of that my anxiety and mental health were severely affected by how our leave absence office handled my case and the sheer fact we are held to a point system. Which, I completely understand how a point system can keep people accountable, but they (management) has zero accountability for the affect that it has on good workers who bust their butts to be at work. I quite literally was finally diagnosed with GAD as a result of my doctors and my place of business and the incompetence into finding out what information I needed to provide to make sure I was 100% covered as I kept getting different answers from everyone that I was supposed to be talking too. The point system keeps the "bad" employees accountable but it is a serious detriment to those of us who never take vacation except for emergency situations (ie being hospitalized). On top of the fact that not all the time does an employee know when they are going to get sick, the stomach flu can keep someone down for 14ays or more but yet 1 point only covers 2 consecutive days meaning if you don't have FMLA/ADA filed you are pointed to the point of a verbal or write up. Sickness isn't something predictable, so if you get enough points to equal a verbal or write up you are stuck with those points for an entire year, however, that does not take into consideration the fact that people get sick more often now, COVID, flu etc etc these things can strike any time of year, so if you're already at write up standard, what is that employee going to do? Most likely go to work and infect everyone around them (trust me, we have nurses/doctors do this all the time). It's a system set up to fail on both sides, you either eliminate your good employees who know they can go anywhere that doesn't have a point system limiting their mental health and healthcare needs, or you keep firing people and having to train new ones thus never having a single person to understand the clinic or area they are assigned too.

So I worked at a large teaching hospital back in the 80’s. A famous one. They went from 8 hr shifts to 12 hr shifts for nurses and they had no idea what they were doing. They made us work 7 (12 hr) shifts in a row then have a week off. That’s 84 hrs in one week! This was an ICU too where you rarely had time to eat a meal much less go to the restroom. It was horrendous. After the 5th shift your brain was mush. It was not only dangerous it was so unhealthy. On your week off they were calling you in for overtime too. So many of us left at one time as we were physically and mentally exhausted that they had to close down beds. They would write you up if you refused to work overtime too which is against the law btw. After I left I heard that the labor relations board fined them for illegal work conditions. It happened to them more than once. Their motto was “it’s a privilege for you to work here”. I guess that’s why they thought it was ok to abuse us. I left and went travel nursing and never looked back. I was too young to be that exhausted all the time. Oh and they paid poorly too. I made 50% more going farther south. Now it’s illegal not to pay you overtime for greater than 40 hrs in one week or 80 hrs in 2 weeks. So they owed us overtime too which we never got. That and no dinner break either. Thankfully the laws have improved a little since then.
