Jean Andes Hi, It is a great gift to meet and know new people in this life. I know you might have seen so many articles like this before but believe me. There are really good articles and interesting posts on your timeline. I checked your posts and you always post good write up and beautiful pictures But we are not Facebook friends yet. I've tried sending you a request several times but it doesn't go through. I would be so happy if you can just click on my profile and send me a request, but if you find this message embarrassing, please forgive my manners, have a safe day.

Chris Mcdonald I question whether they have to be put to death or if the cost of treating them merely exceeds the threshold the owners will pay. Proper treatment and best efforts to save and comfort the animals should be a requirement for participation in these events. Then we will really see what can be done to improve treatment and minimize injury.

I don’t care about horse racing one way or the other and personally wouldn’t mind seeing it stop, but there somebody in existence who objects to any given thing, so I view banning of most things as a last resort.

Okay as an actual horse person: no, racing does not need to be banned. But yes, I do think there needs to be some sort of investigation into this.

What’s causing these horses these injuries? Were any of these deaths or deaths leading up to the Kentucky Derby just random freak things horses can be prone to? Is it from being pushed too hard? Incorrect hoof care? Bad track footing? Incorrect handling? Are we, in the modern age, breeding these race horses too “light” and they don’t have the substance or bone needed to take the punishment of the modern race cards? Are drugs involved? Are they ignoring signs of discomfort?

There’s many things that go into this. I just hate, hate, hate seeing people just go “ban racing!” A lot of people who work in racing love these horses dearly, they spend every waking moment with them, caring for them, it hurts them when anything happens to them. True horseman are involved in racing.

Horses are social, plains-ranging animal, yet racehorses tend to be housed in isolation and close confinement. Stereotypical behaviour – which manifests itself as abnormal, usually repetitive behaviours, stemming from frustration, stress and inhibition of natural behaviour is not uncommon in racehorses. These include the prevalence of crib-biting (repetitive oral behaviour where the horse sucks in a large amount of air) and weaving (a repetitive behaviour where the horse sways on its forelegs, shifting its weight back and forth).

Tongue ties is the widely used and unregulated practice of immobilising a horse’s tongue to prevent the horse getting their tongue over the bit during a race and to preventing ‘choking’ during high intensity exercise. It is used as a horse is easier to control when pressure is applied via the reins to the bit on the horse’s tongue which forces them to be compliant. Problems associated with tongue tie use include horses showing signs of pain, anxiety and distress, difficulty swallowing, cuts and lacerations to the tongue, bruising and swelling.
We oppose the use of all animals in entertainment, including the use of horses in the racing industry. It’s time to end this cruelty.
