2ºJayma Temple I am not saying they are. Move on from that point. I am saying that if therapy can help one issue why can it not help the other. Why is surgery even an option?
And I don't care what any adult does with their body. But we are at a point in our society where we are actually talking about children getting surgeries and taking meds for what is an emotional issue in which therapy can work.

3ºEvery young teenager goes through this stage with puberty; it’s normal.
So, it appears that some people never grow out of it, which is sad. The article mentions some possible causes for this condition, but it ignores the fact that it’s normal for pubescents to go through this. (I taught junior high for 28 years before moving on to teach high school; I’ve seen several thousand kids work through this stage of life.)
I wonder if the accessibility of cell phone cameras has worsened it. Three decades ago, teen girls checked compact mirrors incessantly, but film was too expensive for them to take ten selfies every day.

4ºNola Geoff Because my son would literally commit su*cide if the option were to either go to therapy until he could accept his body or to not go to therapy. He still goes to therapy because transition doesn't fix everything, but therapy itself is not the fix. Regarding people who are overweight - there are surgeries and medicine for that, too (my husband is using medication to lose weight); burn victims have access to plastic surgery; amputees have access to prostheses; etc. We have a LOT of interventions and fixes available to support people in appearing to others the same way they see themselves. And therapy should always be part of it, because the fix isn't always enough on its own.

Therein lies your problem. You care too much about how you appear to others. I thought we were trying to get away from that.
Though we wanted to teach our kids to love themselves as they are. Be unapologetically who they are. That's what I taught my kid and I am glad I did.
If you are seeking to alter your appearance because you care how you look to others, then you will be forever disappointed in life.

I fully disagree with you when it comes to children and this issue as do most of America. But when you are an adult you can do what you want and no one should be able to discriminate against you.

I've lived in New Orleans for over 50 yrs. We embrace everyone regardless of who you are.

6ºZyn Marlin People don't kill themselves simply because they feel they were born with the wrong body. People kill themselves because they are depressed, desperate or suffer some other mental illness. Suicide is a symptom. Treat the actual problem.

And I assume that some kids do regret the decision later and possibly become suicidal? Like I said treat the problem and the problem is not being born one way or another.

So if a 12 yr old girl came home and told her mom she wants breast like Beyonce or she will kill herself you think she should go to therapy and get the surgery if she really really wants them? Probably and then throw a party for her.

And the keep your hands of my kids excuse does not work for child abuse and that is what this is. Period.

7ºNola Geoff children are not getting surgeries for body dysmorphia. Children have been prescribed the same medications for decades for a variety of medical conditions. Body dysmorphia is a medical condition. They do get massive amounts of therapy before during and after any medical intervention. You came on a post about a celebrity who is cisgender and has a mental health crisis but you choose to make it something completely unrelated. Don't let your own children have medical care but you do not get to tell me or anyone else how to care for their children or themselves. My opinion of your behavior is only about you, not an entire group of marginalized people. You came here as a bully and then wanna be a wounded when you get called on it. You are a dangerous person.

8ºNola Geoff If you think it's child abuse, call and report me. I've been licensed as a foster parent; my son is adopted. You don't intimidate me and your opinions don't matter to me or my kids. Treating the actual problem includes being able to access appropriate medical care, and that is what we do as parents for our children. We work with medical professionals to get our kids the treatment they need, from vaccines to therapy to reproductive care to physical and occupational therapy to dental care to prescription medications. If you'd like to argue with underpaid and overworked child welfare folks that seeking and following medical advice is child abuse, you go ahead and waste your time and theirs.

9ºNola Geoff Yes. Because both types of dysphoria can lead to other complications such as eating disorders, self-harm, and su*cide, you have to treat the dysphoria. In the case of gender dysphoria, the treatment involves altering the body to match the internal identity; this typically resolves the issue and reduces the self-harm behaviors. In the case of body dysphoria, while you can get plastic surgery to modify your external appearance, there's usually no point at which the outside body matches the internal perspective, meaning that medical/surgical intervention alone won't be enough to resolve the issue and reduce self-harm behaviors. Even with plastic surgery, people will continue to have eating disorders and desire more surgery because they can never attain the perfect body they see in their head. This is what makes body dysphoria a mental illness that needs to be treated with therapy and sometimes medication, depending on the root of the illness, while gender dysphoria is not.
