A rural Texas high school postpones graduation after only 5 seniors meet graduation requirements

“The state of Texas has guidelines for graduation,” the district superintendent said. “This is not a dance floor. … It’s not a homecoming pep rally. This is graduation.”

Sabrina CP it is always about racism. No, it’s reality versus racism. In this devastating “woke” culture where everything is turned into a racial issue, and everybody/every group is a victim, we cannot speak what we see plainly. We must coddle everyone and in doing so we ultimately destroy ourselves because we will create a world with no laws, no values, no morals. Not just because of my sons observation at the the high school, but because of my own experiences working with Mexicans and Central American folks in Calif and 3 other states, I know that a majority of these young people, the ones with English issues especially, do not value education. They come for labor jobs and yes they have large families and yes those jobs are insufficient income for such large families and yes they need government benefits to supplement the income. And without border control you get many more people needing benefits along with all the Americans already wanting those same benefits, you get a smaller educated populace overall, you get the dumbing down of America which is already in full swing and definitely not just because of Hispanics. I am Hispanic and I know by looking within my own circles that this is so. It’s not always racism my dear. It’s truth.

Britt Schleis again, I already covered that the students not doing their work with the student's fault. But the administration not realizing until the very last minute that only five students were graduating is the administration's fault. There is no way anyone in the student body could have those numbers. Any student might know individually that they're not going to graduate but there's no way any of the students could have known this. The administration should have known this. I'm not sure what's worse. And administration knowing that only five students were actually going to graduate and not letting the superintendent know and just deciding to cancel a graduation. Or is it worse that they didn't have their act together and they didn't know? It's one or the other they either didn't realize it only five students were graduating until the very last minute or they knew and should have reported it to the school superintendent. We've already discussed how those bad students did the bad thing of not studying that part is basic. But the really good question is what is this school administration doing for their paychecks. If it isn't planning a proper graduation for the students who did do the work and if it's not reporting that their students are not graduating to the superintendent so something can be done instead of crapping on the five students who did do the work. And in any situation where you are dealing with teenagers versus paid adults who should you be able to count on in that situation to be the responsible party? And that was what my point was no one is excusing the kids who didn't do the work. But it takes more than just those teenagers not getting things done for something this massive to go wrong.

Britt Schleis did you read the article? I think it might have even been the first sentence that said this graduation wasn't canceled until an end of year review had been done on the school. Administrators have the ability to query or report before an end of year review to see how their students are doing. It need not have waited until the end of the year. It takes minutes to run a query. That should have been done before the review and announcement from the superintendent. I can tell you want to only blame the kids who didn't do their work. But Im not sure how you think the school shouldn't have been more in tune with something that would affect their graduating class. Guess we're going to have to disagree. And it'll be easy for the adults to blame the children until there's actually a Job review of all of their performances.

Britt Schleis the school administration should have known much farther in advance that only five students were graduating. Canceling at the last minute like that was absolutely unnecessary had they been doing their jobs. They should have let the five that were graduating know ahead of time and come up with an alternate plan so those five could have their graduation. And they had to know before the semester started that there was no way that all the other students wouldn't be able to make enough credits to graduate. Yes the students who didn't do their work are a problem. But this comment is about how the adults failed all of the students-the ones who studied and the ones who didn't complete the work because they weren't held accountable until just now. What is that school administration doing during the work day if it's not managing the student's education?

Orna Claire I guess I was one of your desperates as a child, but I chose to go to school and get out of it. Yes my Hispanic mom had 8 kids in a roach infested apartment. But I went to school, Berkeley no less, not quite as high class as Harvard, but good. Lots of rich kids go there too. But these graduates, myself included, pay high taxes so the desperate folk, many of whom can but won’t go to school or work, can get benefits. We already have many natural born Americans who prefer benefits. Notice the shortage of workers across this country. So do we need desperates from other countries to increase taxes even more? Nope. My health insurance rates, my taxes, all increasing exponentially each year. How would you care for the desperate folks without the rich mommies and daddies and college graduates who get high paying jobs? That’s reality not racism. But call it what you want.

Britt Schleis I never said that the school should have to harass students to get work done. But they should have pulled the numbers of their students and been keeping track of them to know that those students weren't graduating before they ruined the graduation for the five who were. If the administration had been doing their job properly they would have known far sooner that there would have been only five graduates they could have chosen a small venue and held a graduation for them. If the adults did their job right and known well enough in advance of the small number, they could have done something different. I imagine there will be an investigation and chances are it will turn up at the school was falsely reporting numbers of failing students. We'll just have to wait and see on this one, but to say the school has no fault at all when these five graduates are being shorted a graduation they are owed isn't accurate.

Mel Olsen Smizinski I'm not sure how to say this more clearly and I've mentioned it on almost every single one of my comments, yes we know the teenagers didn't do their work. If I say it like a caveman "teenagers bad!" could we please let go of that part and focus on the actual adults in the situation who work for the school administration and did not let anyone know?? but rather it was revealed in a year-end review how few students they had graduating!! That is either massive irresponsibility or them hoping enough students can pass in time to have the ceremony. And that wasn't their risk to take if they knew and they were highly irresponsible if they didn't know they only had five graduates. Which is it? The administration is not responsible for making the students do the work to graduate but they are responsible for letting everyone and anyone involved know that only five of their students are graduating! And that is what they didn't do in a timely fashion. We've already placed the proper blame on the children, why is no one able to actually look at the adults objectively at all?!

Todd Hanson And Biden raising the debt?!?!1/4 of all the debt that the US EVER incurred, EVER, was under Trump, to the tune of 7.8 Trillion.
And stop talking about the US debt and the debt ceiling in one sentence. Debt is what you have already spent. Now the payment has come due. You spent $1000, but you now owe $1020 because of interest. Your credit card limit was $1000; they RAISED your debt ceiling so you could buy that item, but now you’re past it, and you must pay a bit larger of an interest fee on the amount you went over.
In the US, it is required to get a certain amount of votes to raise the ceiling and pay this extra “interest” on DEBT YOU HAVE ALREADY INCURRED!!

Well this is just sad what are they teaching in schools nowadays I'm glad these students are going to get their graduation sooner or later but Lord that's just a shame how do you have a whole school full of kids and five kids that's able to graduate and the rest of them are not that's just sad. Boy with some of these comments everybody out there trying to blame somebody else well this is a school for kids that have teachers and parents how you get a whole school full of kids that ain't allowed to graduate because they do not have the curriculum on their side it's just sad and there's blame to go around.

10ºWhich means the school did not do its job well. Where are all the reports to the state and Federal government? Disadvantage means they received Federal money what was done with it? Which subject did they not pass and when did that data show up that they were not on track for graduation? What was the rate in 8th grade and how many made it to 9th grade. Did they not do virtual school during the pandemic? Are the children not treated well at school and the parents are pulling them from school? Are the children working in the fields due to local economy and dynamics? Is bus service provided? How many times did the teacher go to the house or the truant officer? What were the stats in 5th grade and how many students? What is the migration rate of that school system? In other words the student in high school are they new to the area or have they always been in that town? Did the district report the problems to the Federal government and plug into numerous programs provided by USA Education Department for such a population? What did the school provide during the pandemic? Unless special circumstances without additional help about 50 to 60 percent should graduate on parenting alone. 20 t0 25 percent often pass no matter what, 50 percent it depends on treatment, curriculum, special programs whether they graduate but they often come close usually math holds them back, and then 20 percent need direct instruction small group most of which is temporary and of that 20 percent 5 to 10 percent have serious issues of some type and take specialists to have a chance. Baylor University, Texas State Tech and McLennan Community College within 26 miles of Marlin. Mostly African American and Latino so plenty of scholarship money for any student passing in Marlin. Did the town contact those colleges and have them put programs in so as to put those students in college for nearly free? PAULINE AND JANE CHILTON MEMORIAL MARLIN PUBLIC LIBRARY has programs has a Facebook page full of books, tutoring, parents, librarians all taking care of children in an excellent way so parents are fully supporting the librarian in the town. Adult volunteers and Librarian in April had tables full of children teaching English skills. Library full of adults helping kids. https://www.facebook.com/...670.-2207520000.
