Pediatricians’ group plans evidence review to inform care for transgender youth

The American Academy of Pediatrics reaffirmed on Thursday its existing policy supporting gender-affirming care for transgender youth, but the group also plans to conduct an additional review of research.

To me this is another sign of the dangers of politic being intertwined in all/every aspect of life. PC of today to me are no different than the PC of yesteryear… they will be wrong in the future.

Sometimes it’s for the better sometimes it’s for the worse but to me one can really not tell which at the time, only in hindsight.

Add to that, in some cases maybe that’s not a big deal, in others (like science… ie this… it can be)

My big dig on the AAP and many medical groups) is they currently are quick on the policy statements based on expert opinion but slow on the research that supports, proves, or directs.

Gender and sexuality is complex and would be a place where (to me) studies are needed more than policy statements. Other countries medical boards are doing things differently, finding pro/cons, ect. Saying the protocols of today are the be all and end all seems ludicrous to me and when you pair that some of those recommendations are a be all and end all intervention I am uncomfortable.

Welcome the research but critic yet again a horse ahead of the cart moment.

I saw some loser in the comments say being trans only started a decade ago, like a fad. There are accounts of trans being a thing so old that the ancient Greeks put "a man in a woman's body" into their myths. There was a trans clinic in Germany in the 1930s the Nazis did their best to erase. Trans persons help kick off the Stonewall Riots in 69. They are in famous alt comic books from the 90s.

So trans people were there. It's only been 10 years since they broke through to an extent that the mainstream acknowledged them.

Aki Thomas extremely left wing Sweden & England have stopped all hormone therapy in kids die to unforeseen, serious long term health problems such as osteoporosis, infertility, lack of sexual functioning, liver damage, cognitive impairment and further mental health issues. They’ve been doing it longer than we have and are shutting it down. Ever see a woman who de-transitioned who is stuck with a male voice, facial hair and male pattern baldness? That’s not reversible. PS All studies can be easily manipulated to get the desired outcome. I can create a study that proves the birth control pill is 100% ineffective.

Transgender kids deserve to have access to grow up and live their lives as their true selves as cis kids do.

For all the people clutching their pearls at the idea of gender-affirming care for trans kids: None of you seem to care that cisgender kids can take puberty blockers, that cisgender teenagers can take HRT or birth control, you don't seem to mind that cosmetic surgery is legal for minors in all 50 states (unsure about the legality in countries other than the United States). But you lose your minds if these same procedures are available for transgender kids.

You have been swooped up into a moral panic. Come down from it.

Brent Baergen ️‍⚧️LGBTQ+ youth are more likely than their heterosexual or cisgender peers to report high levels of trauma symptoms including hyper-vigilance and avoidance, putting them at greater risk of suicide, according to new research from The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention group for LGBTQ+ young people.

In a report published Monday, more than 30 percent of LGBTQ+ youth between the ages of 13 and 24 reported high levels of trauma symptoms. Another 60 percent said they had experienced low to moderate levels of trauma, and just 4 percent reported never having experienced any trauma symptoms at all.
...
Trevor Project researchers said experiences of discrimination, harassment and violence against LGBTQ+ youth can contribute to trauma symptoms, which can include feeling scared, anxious or unsafe. A June report from the LGBTQ+ media advocacy group GLAAD found that roughly 70 percent of LGBTQ+ Americans face regular discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, an increase over the last two years.

The impact of recent legislation that targets LGBTQ+ people and their fundamental rights also cannot be discounted, Myeshia Price, a senior research scientist at The Trevor Project, said Thursday.

You have the slur “groomer.” That is laughably your evidence.

Here is some of the medical community’s evidence:

Regret after Gender-affirmation Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Prevalence

Conclusions:
Based on this review, there is an extremely low prevalence of regret in transgender patients after GAS. We believe this study corroborates the improvements made in regard to selection criteria for GAS. However, there is high subjectivity in the assessment of regret and lack of standardized questionnaires, which highlight the importance of developing validated questionnaires in this population.

Long-term Outcomes After Gender-Affirming Surgery: 40-Year Follow-up Study

Conclusion: Gender-affirming surgery is a durable treatment that improves overall patient well-being. High patient satisfaction, improved dysphoria, and reduced mental health comorbidities persist decades after GAS without any reported patient regret.
