Lolita, a beloved orca at the Miami Seaquarium set to be released into the ocean, has died | CNN

The 57-year-old whale, sometimes called Toki and known as Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut by the Lummi people, was set to be released back into the ocean.

We loved living in Flordia. We took advantage of all the wonderful places to visit with our families.
Out of all the places we attended, we as a family most definitely enjoyed boycotting Sea World. This illness that people have in their minds that they need to profit from these innocent animals hurts our hearts. We have taught our children that this is not okay at all.
It can be acceptable if any of these animals are found injured or unwell and are in need of medical attention. They should be released back to their home once they have been rehabilitated.
Many types of animals should stay amongst people only if they are in danger or if they’re unable to care for themselves in every way, we should avoid making animals comfortable with people. Animal sanctuaries are acceptable as many of those animals require protection. Donations for charity come from people who genuinely love and care.
Sorry but please shut down sea world. Keep it open as a major hospital for all sea animals who are being treated and rehabilitated for release.

Just like the one line elephant in the Birmingham (Alabama) zoo, a long time resident, that was set to finally be sent to the elephant rescue sanctuary in Tennessee, a free-range home for former zoo and circus elephants, where they can form herds, sometimes with other elephants they’ve known from decades before or even actual relatives they were once separated from. I think they said it was even related to one already there. They were making arrangements to finally transfer to the elephant to the sanctuary, but it died while still at the zoo. It was heartbreaking. This, too, is just heartbreaking. None of them ever seem to make it back to the ocean to be reunited with their pods. It’s so sad.

Brian Tarbell Yes! In Free Willy, the owner was attempting to kill Willy to collect the insurance money. That has definitely crossed my mind as well. What if the release plan wasn't going according to plan since it was complicated? Was Lolita, who didn't perform for years, costing them money? The tanks off all fish, etc were pretty dirty and rundown looking back in 2018, so we're they cutting corners and using shoddy handymen, as it common in South Florida (maybe the work that was done on her tank had chemicals that were toxic to her)? Who actually owned Lolita once the $20 million was arranged, the original owner, who had a $1 million insurance policy on Lolita? I have so many questions, and it seems so similar to the Free Willy movie, only without the happy ending. I wish they'd do an autopsy to figure out what exactly caused her death.

I’m a Miami native who literally grew up with Lolita (Toki) and her long-deceased tank mate ‘Hugo,’ who died under extremely troubling and awful circumstances even though the truth was hidden at the time. As children, so many of us were entertained and mesmerized by both. And Lolita truly felt like part of our family. But I think it’s also safe to say that as most of us aged and learned more, the barbarism and cruelty of the entire thing became apparent and the Seaquarium itself a symbol of civic shame. She will be deeply missed and the continued existence of these “attractions” elsewhere cannot possibly end soon enough.

Living with a diabetic for eternity is something you need to sit down and think..There's a cure for any type of diabetes and diseases as long you where not born with it so why listen to people who will discourage you and tell you that there is no cure?? George Kelley I woudn't say "supporting evil" because Miami Seaquarium (at least post 1980s) put a lot of effort and care into their animals. Pre 1980s when the knowledge of orca and dolphin keeping was low, there was bound to be slip ups in proper management. Granted the amount of people who think that Tokis caregivers didnt care about her is a disgusting thing, they don't know the interaction her trainers had with her, they just listen to whatever things like Blackfish say, or they look on google mpas to see the tank size, and they just dive full force into PETA nonsense without doing a little bit of research. Now I will admit things got worse lately with the new takeover, but that's less Miami Seaquariums fault and more they just got stuck with the wrong people in charge.
That and the fact that Miami Seaquarium was advocating for a larger tank for so long, but the Florida government would not advocate them more space so she was stuck in that tank until she would eventually be moved out (Of course that's what happens when you have idiots in office for like 30+ years lol)

Tokitae was born in the Salish Sea... her mother still swims there. She was violently kidnapped in August of 1970. Her mother and pod frantically searched for her after her kidnapping. She was held captive for 53 years, tortured and eventually killed, away from her pod and her home. Held in prison for the crime of being beautiful and interesting. Those who tortured her made a fortune from her misfortune. Monsters.

Tokitae lived the life of a prisoner. She sang the songs of her pod and the Salish Sea all the days of her life. She watched her tank mate beat his head against the wall of the tank to end his suffering and his life the only way he could. After that she lived alone... a social animal ripped away from all connection to her kind. Monsters.

Tokitae died a prisoner... kidnapped from her home and family.
Promised to be returned home but they slow played it enough to wait until she died. They can claim, "we did everything we could" and feel like their conscience is clear. Monsters.

We will mourn her, and we will remember.

She is finally free.
