Why you have to walk so far to your gate at the airport | CNN Business

Bigger is better for the airport business, even if it’s harder on your feet.

Elizabeth Moyer I think it's one of the roomiest major airports. The concourses are straight shots, except for the little extensions they added to B. There are times it can get crowded, like I said peak travel times or a flight is delayed and passengers pile up. Of course sometimes there are zombie travelers just meandering in the middle, that's everywhere.
Everyone has different mobility, but even with my limp I've made 35 minute connections from C to B (not an intentional connection). A 25 minute connection seems almost impossible anywhere, except a few times I had my arrival gate right next to my departure gate.
It's certainly far easier to navigate than other major airports such as Houston, Dulles, Chicago and especially Dallas.

We are infirm, not lazy. typically you might have 1 1/2 hours between flights. Some larger planes (for us unable to afford First Class) the time to deboard after landing can be over 1/2 hour or more depending on jams in the aisles. Then walking a brisk 1/2 hour to the next boarding gate, following confusing signage, stopping for a restroom break, you are lucky even if very healthy to arrive just in time for boarding. None of us are O.J. doing Avis car rental commercials. I am 80, my wife 82, but we still like to travel. After 5 hours in a cramped seat, it's nice to stretch but not run a marathon!

This topic is one of the reasons why I prefer to go through Denver. It's huge but they seem to have thought it out. Multiple moving walkways for the long terminals ( they are getting long in the tooth and seem to break more often). Wide concourses to accommodate peak flow of travelers. Lots of glass to give an open feeling. Central hubs for most of the retail. Although you can't go directly across those, probably two-fold to force you to walk a little through the retail and create the atrium view down to the trains
It seems they made the right decision to leap out onto the prairie to have the space to do it right. To be fair I don't actually go to Denver, just transit through the airport. It may be a nightmare getting way out there if you're from there.

Charlotte N.C. and Chicago O'Hare are the worst. LA international is a 5ive mile hike and then there are no gate information signs until 1/2 hour before boarding time (so people will spend time in the shops). At Charlotte one cannot move by scooter or people mover from wing to wing - you must get off, go down and then take another elevator back up. Then wait for another people mover or cart. Airport architects should be made to walk forth and back endlessly as punishment for their designs. Big airports keep adding more flights than they have gates for. Thus your arriving flight must taxi out to the back 40 and wait for a gate to open up. Meanwhile you need to pee badly!
