Aspirin can help reduce risk of second heart attack, study finds, but less than half of eligible adults take it | CNN

Among people with a history of cardiovascular disease who were surveyed in a new study, only about 40% reported taking aspirin to prevent another heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular event.

As noted in the article, the benefits of aspirin in secondary prevention -- prevention of a second heart attack or stroke -- have been quite definitively shown to outweigh the risks. Of course, with every medication there are some people who shouldn't be using it. However, that is likely a rather small percentage of the affected people. Use of this widely available, inexpensive, medicine in these conditions can save a lot of lives. It sounds like there may be a little understanding of why people are not using this highly effective medication as recommended, and I hope researchers figure out ways to meet the goal set for use. #IAmHereUS

I’m not convinced those stats for developed countries is right. I’m in the UK and had a heart attack at 48 and now heart failure and take Aspirin as per the consultants’ advice. When I say advice I mean a long list of drugs I need to take to basically ensure I live as long as possible given the condition. I can’t imagine anyone going against a consultant and not taking the aspirin. As a side note / Asprin does not prevent a second heart attack as a stand alone drug, but rather it is part of a series of drugs that will help take pressure off the heart
