Special Counsel Jack Smith pushes back on Trump’s immunity claim | CNN Politics

Special counsel Jack Smith has pushed back on former President Donald Trump’s claim that he should be cloaked with absolute immunity from criminal prosecution, arguing in a new filing that the sweeping assertion “threatens to license Presidents to commit crimes to remain in office.”

Cajun Keith only I'd be a communist if the definition of that term means I feel no one is above the law and that anyone accused of a crime should stand trial and be judged by a jury of their peers. Why are you against that? Have the Republicans completely turned their back on the Constitution? On the rules and laws that define our country and protect EVERYONES freedom? Why do YOU want to surrender YOUR freedoms? Remember, any thing you allow Trump to do, you give the immediate power to BIDEN to do the same. Not sure you'd like that. Just image! Drag Queens EVERYWHERE!! And BOOKS for students! And Trump and his followers imprisoned without warrants or charges.

Let Trump have his day in court. Heaven knows he is doing all he can to keep that from happening. I say, let's do this. Our country is at an epic crossroads in its survival. Stop with the whining and get on with this. If he's so sure he's innocent even though numerous REPUBLICANS and his former lawyers have testified AGAINST him on the record and before courts of law, then I don't think he should be trying to prolong his trials. He should he EAGER to get these trials started to prove his innocence!
But he isn't doing that. He's attacking judges, witnesses, federal agents and anyone who might hold him accountable for his actions. He keeps demanding that he is above the law of this land and his charges dismissed, instead of standing to prove his claims.
It's time to get ON with it already!

Bill Martin well actually I’ve always have been a registered independent up until 2020 when I changed to Democrat.
The problem with the Republican impeachment inquiry is that they have yet to show any evidence of their allegations they continue to say they have.
If it’s proven that Biden has committed a crime, then yes he should be impeached and charged.
The only reason I believe that Trump wasn’t impeached was Republicans were afraid if they voted to impeach and remove Trump from office, it would be the end of their political career.
The proof of my belief is because of what happened to the Republicans who have called out Trump, like Chaney and Kinzinger.

Antonio Frost you know I would keep in mind especially if I had young children. About supporting Republicans. They sided with the insurance companies that children with any kind of pre-existing
Insurance companies don't have to cover them. Children with brain tumors leukemia Hodgkin's lymphoma. Thank God the Democrats won that fight. Also Republicans represented the healthcare insurance companies in the fight. For healthcare screenings for all. Which is colonoscopy blood work for cancers. Long x-rays. Every several years. So you may want to study the history of Republicans before you start voting for them especially if you're a family man.. Americans that support Republicans could be voting for a death sentence for their families.. I would never trust a Republican with the care of my life or my family.. good luck Happy New Year. ????

A MESSAGE FOR YOU FROM DECENT THINKING AMERICANS (since you are neither)

All you have to say is"
Trump will win! That's it.

Trouble is 49% of voters are independent, 60% of them detest Trump, so you and him sure have some convincing to do.

Yet you say nothing. You do no convincing. Its as if Trump supporters can say "we love Trump" but have no idea why. You're not much use to Trump. In fact decent thinking Americans laugh at you.

What is more, all your faith is based on your predictions which have not materialized ever! Not since 2020.
So you and him. Losers all day. Worse though you're the bane of America and since you treat democracy so badly, we say go live in Russia!

The 45th president of the United States, Donald John Trump, is a particular kind of president, out of all the previous presidents in modern history, and a specific kind of threat to established political organizations.

He is not a threat per se to voters, or to Americans, but rather to the current political party system.

But there is a fascinating reason why this is so, and I’d like to suggest that it stems from the most powerful element of America itself, including its founding: individualism.

That may seem like an obvious statement, but if you map out all the elements of the current U.S. political economy, they are made, for the most part, out of the exact opposite of individualism: institutionalism. Trump stands in especially stark contrast, as he is by nature not only an outsider to politics, but an outsider to many entrenched business practices. Even if you may find him completely objectionable, he still functions as a symbol, and that symbol, like it or not, is an individual.

Take a look at the the Constitution: it is signed by individuals, in individual signatures representing individual commitment. So is the Declaration, and so is the Federalist. Yes, these signers also had roles in business enterprise, or may have held official office, but institutionalism then was mostly a formality; it carried no ubiquitous institutional power. They acted first and foremost as individuals.

Harvard Law professor and historian Morton Horwitz wrote a two-volume, well-known and well-regarded series called “The American Transformation” where he argued that our laws, judicial system and political institutions, were transformed and gradually re-organized around the accommodation of special interests in business.

But that may be just the opposite of what actually happened: over time, American institutions grew and grew, and grew, and now have grown out of control so that they dominate the private sector of individual interests. This includes our nation’s university system that has such influence over young adult minds. Universities are complete corporate, political institutions, and they follow, obey, and carry out all institutional signals, orders and directives (the “Covid" program is an example, which depends entirely on group obedience and group ideology: the individual is by contrast deemed “unsafe”).

The individual is the greatest threat to progressive Leftism, as it is to all authoritative regimes seeking the fantasy of absolute control. Trump is part of that system in several ways, but a part of him also naturally stands outside it, and his presence alone symbolizes directly and indirectly, deliberately or not, the nonconforming individual will of hundreds of millions of individual Americans with individual lives, individual families, individual businesses, individual wealth, individual thoughts, individual aspirations, and individual power.

Get up the noses of Trump supporters decent thinking Americans.

They have absolutely nothing to say in his defence the poor brainless souls. And they would wreck democracy for their cult.

And have no compunction about using the courts like Trump does to the full everyday of the week.

10ºDear GOP/MAGA:

On the off chance that the Supreme Court were to rule that Donald Trump was immune from prosecution for anything illegal he did while President as is the case under dictatorships, you’d better understand that means that if Biden does anything illegal, he would be immune as well, and thus you are simply throwing away millions of our tax dollars with your revenge impeachment! Be careful what you wish for.

And on the even slighter chance that the U.S. Supreme Court upholds the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling that Trump must be held accountable for violating the 14th Amendment & kept off their ballot, don’t forget that a core principle of Conservatives has been to support State’s rights, unless you’re part of today’s CINO* party!
