As you may have noticed, the last South African rep to come to the podium, John Dugard, focused on the legal elements to satisfy the court’s criteria: to prove that there was a dispute it had jurisdiction over and to issue provisional measures on.
The representatives before him focused on the evidence of genocide, both the acts and the intent. What’s unprecedented is the evidence they screened as videos in the courtroom was from social media, such as footage uploaded as Instagram reels by news outlets.
This shows how important social media has become, not just in educating people and serving as an alternative to biased mainstream media, but also to keep records that can be used to support international proceedings.

“On behalf of the Republic of South Africa I wish to express my gratitude to the court for convening this hearing on the earliest possible date to entertain South Africa as requests for the indication of provisional measures in this matter.
In our application, South Africa has recognized the ongoing Nakba of the Palestinian people through Israel’s colonization since 1948, which has systematically and forcibly dispossessed, displaced and fragmented the Palestinian people.
Deliberately denying them the internationally recognized in alienable rights to self determination and the internationally recognized rates of return as refugees to their towns and villages in what is now the state of Israel.”
