1ºLisa Naegele I agree you can’t tell anyone what is right for them, but based on the article and what he said he wanted and needed, he is very naive about realities. I have experience moving to 2 other countries than the US, and hear others who are excited to move - so many think it is like moving between states. And it is at the moment extremely easy to enter the US and be allowed to stay - other countries -particularly Europe - have health insurance requirements, verifiable income requirements, limits and requirements on working and getting a work visa, language requirements, clean criminal record, etc. and can expel you if you do not follow. Especially living in a small community they would know if he is there legally. It is a bit easier in Italy than France for instance to get a work visa - Italy does allow digital nomads which France doesn’t. None of those requirements are his decision but the Italian government’s decision. The article addressed none of that - but he thinks he might be able to make a living as a busker. That shows naïveté in itself when none of the right questions are addressed.
2ºPerfect example of the naïveté of Americans who think that everything will work and be similar to the US just with the romance of Europe. And that it will be much cheaper. He shouldn’t have been shocked to find how dilapidated and unsafe his house was at that price - and what does it say about the economy of that town (and Italy) that it was acceptable to house elderly nuns there. He hasn’t addressed the requirements for living there as a resident - he will need to prove valid health insurance until such time as he qualifies for national health (5 years for full coverage).- and understand that where he lived access to healthcare is limited and many people buy private insurance in addition to national health. He must become semi fluent in Italian. His first visa must show proof of income and establish how he will support himself. And on and on. Very naive.

You can't check out a farmer's market or pick up a package at the post office or go to a Fourth of July parade, and you certainly can't send your kids to school without worrying that someone will get shot.
That someone you LOVE will get shot.
Or that YOU will get shot.
This is where we are now.
This is not normal.
This upside down reality is being imposed upon us by those who equate firearms with freedom.
This is anything BUT freedom.
And. This. Is. Not. A. Reality. We. Have. To.
Accept.
