Lin Michelle beaches should have warnings posted. There have been many instances of this happening that I have seen on the news. That’s how I learned about the dangers of digging holes in the sand. But I typically watch the news with my coffee when I wake up and in the evening to catch up with what is going on in the world (news and weather) and to generally stay informed. Even when I had little children … my quiet time before getting them up for school. I watched 9/11 events unfold as they happened. I’m always sharing what I learn that is important to my family. My adult children do not have cable tv only streaming services so they are often unaware unless they see it on social media. Not everyone watches broadcast news.

This breaks my heart on many levels. Being a grandma of a boy and his sister close to this age plus having a deep love for the beaches. My heart breaks for this family. I can’t imagine their pain and this little boy going through deep grief and sadness over losing his little sister just while playing together. Being on Florida beaches myself and watching kids dig deep holes before but it never occurred to me the danger of it. Such a beautiful place to have such sorrow and tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this little girl.

Jonathan Snell years ago, on a beach in Oregon, two young dads dug a huge hole in the sand - a lot like this one. Their two families had so much fun playing in the big hole. After a long day at the beach, the families packed up and went home. The hole had been dug too far from high tide for the waves to fill it in. The next morning another family was out playing in the sand. One child found that big hole. Before anyone knew it, the (now more dry) sand collapsed around that kid. It ended like today’s tragedy. No one really to blame. But just incredibly sad. Now there are signs on that beach about digging too big of holes. But I’m not sure too many remember why they are there.
