2ºI did see that the bridge could have had a bumper system on the piers. Still, it sounds like they lost power and it was a mechanical failure and knew they were going to have a collision. No one knew that hitting the pier would knock the whole bridge down. It isn't just the six lives who would lost which is devastating. It is the loss of the resource of the bridge. I shudder to think what commuters are doing this week. It takes years to rebuild a bridge that size. Tragic. I feel for everyone. The guys who were on the ship that got the traffic stopped on the bridge, the families of those who were lost in such a terrifying way, the trauma of their kids, and the people who now have to sort out how to travel without a bridge. They could start a ferry system to ferry cars until the bridge is repaired but still... hard.

5ºJason Edwards I've got 3 decades in transportation infrastructure. The number 1 impediment to infrastructure is the federal government. My state loses 45 cent of every dollar of federal fuel tax revenue. The federal government, who doesn't design, build or maintain a single lane mile of infrastructure dictates to the states what they must do. For example. If a state doesn't include bike lanes in New construction or expansion, it will withhold funds. If I recall, the federal government had withheld funds from states that didn't comply with DEI.
Also consider, there are 2 federal agencies, USDOT and FHWA that absorb $500bn per year of fuel tax funds to operate. Meanwhile, both agencies do absolutely nothing with respect to the construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure. The ONLY sub-agency of USDOT that is functional is the FAA. The rest could be eliminated
